I have been working on my friends 2001 Hyundai Sonata 2.4 DOHC, it started off with a transmission speed sensor, that replaced then the spark plug cables burned up, changed the cables and all four plugs, then it was fine for a week. His wife was driving the car and the car randomly shut off and wouldn’t turn over, got a code P0335 Crankshaft position sensor, got a new sensor, was a pain in the butt located inside the crank case behind the timing belt had to remove everything, installed the new sensor, realized the inner timing belt was shredded to bits so we replaced that, lined up all the timing marks, even opened up the valve cover and aligned the cams perfectly. Put it all back together and the car will crank but will not start. Its not locking up, it will turn over just fine, the valves are not bent either. But it keeps trying to turn over, the whole time we were working we had the battery disconnected and on a charger, while trying to turn the car on it cranks and sounds like it gets weaker and weaker with each rotation. I can smell gas, I check the spark plugs and ignition coils and I am getting spark… So I am completely at a loss here… any idea what it can be? I uploaded a video to hear the sound it makes.

      Thank you,

      Chris

Do you have any other codes being thrown? see if this helps.

No other codes are being tripped, it tries so hard to start I can smell gas. But everything appears to be in order, timing was dead on, even loosened the cams during alignment to prevent any possible damage. After the sensor install I get no codes at all being set, the issue that guy had in the link is pretty much dead on my problem just my senor is installed correctly.

This is a video of exactly what the car is doing.

By the sound of the crank and the fact that you smell gas, it might be flooded. When a vehicle floods, it can wash down the cylinder walls and cause a loss of compression. To combat this, put your foot to the floor on the gas while you crank. This should turn off the injectors so that the fuel that’s in the cylinders works it’s way out. In fact, it’s called ‘clear flood mode’.

Still, don’t ignore the basics. You need to go about this like any no start situation and check spark, fuel, and engine mechanical. Especially with the work that you did. Go back over it and make sure everything is connected correctly just to be on the safe side. More info here.

Ok, I will try that tonight when I go back over there to work on the car. It started off with a completely unrelated sensor, that resulted in changing of spark plugs and cables and then down to the inner timing belt. So just holding the pedal to the floor while cranking should do the trick? I was afraid it was the fuel pump, all the fuses and relays were good.

ETC, you are awesome! It started right up, car sounds great. Never messed with timing before so I was a bit clueless but did tons of research so I’m glad it was flooded and not me messing up lol.

                        Thank you!

Pull the dipstick and smell it. If it smells like gas change the oil. Alot of the flooded gas that washed down the cylinder walls ended up in the oil, making it not so completely oil anymore.
