I have a 2001 Honda s2000 that recently started making a humming noise coming from the rear. For the life of me, I can’t figure out what exactly it is. The noise is a humming sound that starts at around 20mph and speeds up the faster I go. There is no clicking, or clunkings sounds whatsoever. The sound is not affected in anyway by being in any gear, acceleration/deceleration, turning in either direction. The sound is 100% constant no matter what. I’ve narrowed it down to the following possibilities —

-Rear wheel bearings went bad again (done 10k miles ago). There is no play in the wheel.
-Rear end is toast (pinion gear)
      -Drive shaft bearings

Here is a video (not my car) of what it exactly sounds like.

Any help would be tremendously appreciated!

Check the oil level in your diff.

One of the first things I did was swap the tires and change the diff fluid. Sound is still there.

I suggested to jack the car up onto jack stands and get someone to drive it at a slow speed until you hear where the noise is coming from.

Wheel bearings would change noise when you turn.
The best thing to do is to take it to a shop. They will lift it, put it in gear, and be able to pinpoint exactly where the noise is coming from.
Remember, you can have them diagnose it and still do the work yourself.

Sounds like a wheel bearing issue. I would also check the tires. Honda’s are VERY picky about the tires you put on them. I’ve seen a lot of non stock tires cause noises like that on Hondas.

Also, make sure you used the correct fluid in the differential. If not, it could cause damage and possibly the noise you’re hearing.

Wheel bearing, Have someone sit in the back while you drive it to help determine which side it is coming from. It can be hard to pinpoint in the driver seat its best to sit in the middle back seat.

I just did the passenger side rear wheel bearing/hub assembly on my 2003 Dodge Neon SXT. Should be pretty easy on the s2000.

                    Eric,

I placed a completely new set of rims/tires and the sound unfortunately persisted. Also, can wheel bearings go bad that fast just after 10k miles? There doesn’t seem to be any vibration at all like a typical wheel bearing. As for the diff fluid, I drained and refilled it with the recommended viscosity and the sounds persisted. Can a bad differential/pinion gear still make that humming noise when in neutral/coasting? The sound is only affected by the speed at which i’m traveling.

Here is what i’ll probably do next —
                    -Change the rear differential
                    -Change the rear wheel bearings

Before you do any of above you should really varify where and what the noise is unless you have plenty of cash to throw around.

Take it to a shop. It probably won’t cost you anything to get it diagnosed.

Took it to a shop who was pretty sure it was the differential/carrier assembly. I’ll be changing it out over the next week or so and keep you guys updated. Thanks for all of the great feedback and help!
