I am replacing the timing belt on a 2001 Honda Civic EX. I am putting in a new water pump and timing belt tensioner. The tensioner has a dowel hole in the back and so does the engine block. When I removed the old tensioner there was nothing to locate these holes. The new tensioner did not come with a dowel pin. I contacted Honda parts dept. and they said it’s not needed due to it doesn’t show a dowel on the schematics.
My question is …. do I need to dowel the tensioner to the engine block on a 2001 Honda Civic EX?

Either Honda changed the style or its the wrong part.
Can you pull the old pin and transfer it.

You don’t need the dowel. You just need a small allen wrench to turn the idler to the correct position to set the tension.
