      Hi Guys,

I am trying to get my girlfriend’s 2001 Honda Civic LX in a running condition. It has been garaged for about 2 years.
Before it had a very rough idle and white smoke.
The first thing I noticed was one of the spark plug tube had a little bit of oil. I went ahead and replaced the tube seals and the valve cover gasket. That solved the problem of engine oil being all over the engine.
Assuming since it was stored for long time, I put fresh gas and used the HEET water remover.

The process reduced the rough idle to a fair bit but not completely.
Once the engine gets warm, the check engine light start flashing.

I checked the codes and got P0301 (Engine 1 misfire) and P0505 (Idle Air Control Malfunction).

I did the compression test twice..
First dry and wet compression test but with a cold engine. The readings were pretty much uniform (120 psi) ) with about 5% rise for the wet test.
I again did the compression test when the engine was warm but the reading was still uniform.
So hopefully that says that my head gasket or piston rings are ok.

I also did the spark test and it came out to be ok.

I do have noid lights and I head that I can check the ignition coil cable for proper function, but kind of confused with that step.
But assuming I am getting proper spark, the cables should be ok.

I removed the radiator cap and cranked the engine, the radiator fluid level does come up and start overflowing, but no bubbles in the reservoir.

I need advice if I should go check the IAC valve and if that can cause P0301 code?
Also if there is a possibility of vacuum leaks that might be causing both P0301 and P0505 codes?

I will check for vacuum leaks tomorrow and keep you guys posted.

        Hello 🙂

About P0505 first. If you take off air cleaner element, and let car idle (warm), then place youre finger over bores in trottle body idle port. If cars stall, then you not have vacuum leak. (not much, at least)
youre cylinder 1 missfire, i would do a power balance test. And see if it really cyl 1 that missfire. Then check injector, injector control and power suply, And of course spark

          Hi,
What mileage is on the car?
It is possible that the idle control valve is stuck/gummed up.
Try unplugging the wiring to it as the ECU will send default values instead of live readings from it. If the car behaves better, then it is worth removing it and giving it a clean with q-tips and carb cleaner.
Does it have a MAF sensor? It might be worth a clean, too!
Can’t help with your misfire tho!

          Chris.

            @ChrisKaye… Car Mileage ~136000.
I am planning to check the IACV in the morning.

            @Allhan
… Already changed the spark plugs and spark looked good too.

I will do the power balance test tomorrow, but I did run the engine with ignition coil to the cylinder 1 (closest to the Camshaft) disconnected. It seemed to run fine but definitely need to do closer inspection.

Also when I pulled my new spark plugs out to perform compression test, most of them were a little wet with what seems to be a gasoline/oil mix and hence seems like fuel injectors has some issues.

              @ Allhan

Checked the ignition coils and quite obviously the connection to cylinder 1 ignition coil was loose and almost off… Snapped it back on! Missfire gone…
              Power balance test…… Ok..

Took the air cleaner module and checked for vacuum leaks if any….. Car stalled so no or no major vacuum leaks…

IACV was pretty clogged. Cleaned it for now and worked well. Don’t know if it will need replacing in the future though.

So far all fix, no codes. Car runs like a dream.
A little smoke from radiator and engine body. Seems like from burning of the spilled oil.

              Thank you guys.
