I have a 01 Civic EX 1.7 i purchased with 170k miles and to be honest it seem like it had over heating problems since i got it. I did all the regular things and maintenance and it went away and came every so often. About 2 years ago i started reading about the 1.7 engine been very weak on the cyl head gasket so it all made sence… The car is loosing coolant slowly through the reservoir and the reservoir has turn dark. I belive exhaust gas gets in the system and pushes antifreeze out through the reservoir. The car has 258k but i am tiered of just making it work, i do want to fix it. We did a cyl head leak down check and all cylinders were holding pressure and past the test. My instinct is to remove the head but at the same time, i belive that if the gasket was bad, it shouldn’t hold pressure. Please help.

      Thank you!

Have you tried a combustion gas leak tester?

Yes, we did it sometime ago and the liquid did change color but it took like 10 min., but i am talking about 2 years ago, so like everything the leak must be worse. The Cyl leak down test was done about 1 year ago and it passed.

Any color change is a positive test. Sounds like maybe now it wouldn’t take 10 minutes.

Any suggestion or opinion on…why the leak down test passed?

A leakdown test is not pass/fail. What were the results?

Pressure didn’t drop. In my limited experience if a head is leaking like mine (as i suppose), the pressure will leave and we should hear it somewhere. Oh and the guy helping me was previously a car mechanic, with much more experience than me.

Are you seeing any foaming in the antifreeze or in your oil also when you did the leak down test did the hissing air only come from the radiator cap hole or did you listen. For air from exhaust and oil filler cap and check all of these places for air leaking

My oil to antifreeze is no problem, those two have always mantained separated. And yes we had radiator cap off, intake tube off and i had my ears back in the exhaust, no leak. Sounds like even that i posted this problem i will rip the head off.
