So I replaced the knock sensors and connector on a 2001 v6 1mz-fe highlander. First off this is a royal pita. Well after getting it all reassembled and letting it run about 10 minutes to try and burp the coolant system it decided to dump the entire contents of antifreeze. How hard is it to get the upper plenum to seal properly?

Never had a problem with them leaking. Did you replace the gaskets? torque the bolts to spec? Are you sure it is not leaking from the crossover hose connection underneath?

Replaced gaskets, brand new bypass hose. New knock sensors and harness.

Didn’t see response where you said you torqued then to spec (also meaning in the proper order)

I would again remove the upper plenum and put a pressure gauge/pump on the radiator and pump it up to check for where it may be leaking.

Turned out to be the rear valve cover leaking oil horribly. I did an oil change before buttoning everything up and the color of fresh oil on the ground confused me with the red coolant that spilt when I removed the intake plenum

Yep. Now have a different problem of a p0505, which wasn’t present the first time I got things reassembled but had the monster oil leak

Well I suppose you aren’t surprised that a P0505 is generally caused by a vacuum leak at the intake. I would start out by ensuring the pcv valve and hose are connected properly.

                    All the best
