I been working on my 01 escape off and on for over a year now and i thought i had it fixed but no soap . after the car sits overnight and cools down it starts but it misfire’s big time . it sounds like the rear engine bank has no spark or no fuel or even sounds like exhaust gasket’s are blown out until the engine warms up which only takes a few minutes than it runs but is a little sluggish but no misfire . will the o2 sensors cause this ???? how many o2 sensors are on this engine ??? how can i test the o2 sensors to see if that is the problem ??? check engine is not on .

Just to bring everybody up to speed, what repairs have you done in the past? Such as changing plugs, gaskets, etc…

O2 sensors aren’t active until the engine warms up, so I believe you can rule those out. You might start with any codes that might be stored. Also check the basics like plugs and fuel delivery. More info on these problems here.

I might start by checking for vacuum leaks also.

Good luck and keep us posted on what you find.

Ok here is the list of what i replaced so far …. new tps. , all new vacuum hoses , cleaned fuel injectors , new seals on lower and upper intake , new spark plugs , new egr valve , new fuel filter , fuel pressure holds at 60 overnight and i replaced the pressure regulator on the rail and yes pressure holds good while the motor is running . i changed all the vacuum related sensors or switches . the only thing i didn’t change is the o2 sensor or sensors . now the motor starts but rough and idles rough for about 5 mins when the temp warms up it does smooth out but when i punch the gas i get spark ping and little lazy to rev up . oh ya i didn’t do anything with the cats because the exhaust flow at the tail pipe seems to be real good i don’t believe their is any restriction . this is why i’m looking for help on this problem . yes at 190,000 miles i did check the compression and it’s in limit’s . if anyone has some idea on what i am over looking please tell me .

ok friday night was the first time i drove the escape in 18 months and aside from the rough starting it ran ok . it seemed to pull good to a point and i had some what sounded like spark plug ping but it didn’t feel like it eased up on pulling but i did notice the fuel pump was a little noisy . in spite of the pump holding pressure could it be getting to the point that it is starting to weaken and maybe quit . it does have 190,000 plus miles on it .
