Hey everybody,
I’ve got a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4×4 with a 5.9L engine, a 46RE 4 speed automatic transmission, and the off road package that gets me factory 4:10 gears, 275/75/17 all terrain tires, and a few other goodies.
Anyway, it’s been having transmission issues (TC clutch slipping, 2-3 shift flare, shuddering, etc) and I’m looking at the options I have. The way I see it I have a couple.
1. Have the existing trans rebuilt and mildly upgraded from a local reputable trans shop that does a lot of mopars. Cost – $1700 with me removing and installing it.
2. Buy a reman unit. So far I’ve look at Jasper, ETE, and Transdepot. I don’t know a whole lot about these companies and who makes the best reman transmissions so I’ve been sending emails to all of them asking what upgrades they do and some are more specific than others. Honestly I can’t figure out what’s what. Cost – Jasper – $1700 with no core charge and no cooler. ETE – $1700 plus core charge. ETE comes with auxiliary trans cooler.
3. Buy a master rebuild kit and some upgraded parts and try to do it myself. There are guides and I have been offered the transmission rebuild manual from someone over on ramforumz.
So what do you guys make of these options? If you’ve bought a reman trans before who did you buy it from and what did you think? If you’ve done a 46RE rebuild before was it successful and how difficult did you find it as a DIY?
I know Spelunkerd and I have essentially the same truck from watching his videos so I hope he will weigh in.

If you can get a Jasper trans I would go that route. Jasper only sells to shops so you will need to have one order it for you.
I have very little experience with this problem. So, like you, I’ll wait for others to weigh in. You don’t have much room as far as resale value for the truck, and it’s always a risk to put money into a vehicle when you don’t know what is going to happen next. How much do you think a truck of this age is worth? This vehicle in particular is quite hard on fuel. All that said, I certainly understand the notion of keeping old vehicles on the road with a little effort. I would go over the vehicle carefully to be as sure as you can that you won’t face more bills to the future.
I’ve had good experience with a 46RE from Jasper.
As for resale value, even with 100k+ miles on them, these 2G Rams tend to go for way too much money. I have an ’01 offroad edition as well, and I paid $8k for it with 106k miles, mild fender rust, and wasn’t running right. I had to pass up several trucks that were more or less in perfect shape because they wanted three, four, or even five thousand dollars more. I do not hesitate to put money into my Ram, but I also don’t daily drive it and intend to keep it for a decade or more. YMMV.
