      Hi all,

      I have a 2001 5.9 Durango I recently purchased. I have changed all the fluid all around. I noticed recently going up a hill on the highway (60mph) a what sounds like a rattling sound as I am accelerating up the hill (under load obviously). I picked up a steelman wireless chassis ear (lets you put devices on the chassis and hear them while driving) but still couldn’t pin point where the sound is coming from.

      To me it sounds like its in the front drivers side of the truck. I had 4 devices and I placed 1. on the rear manifold drivers side (nothing) 2. Upper control arm (nothing) 3. I put on the front differential (nothing abormal) 4. Lower control arm (I hear what sounds like worn brakes, when the brake wear bar starts contacting the rotor, but brakes are not worn down), but I don’t hear that blasted sound from the video. Sounds like a bolt or something but still can’t trace it. Could it be a bearing that I am hearing? Could this be pinging? Thoughts? Video link below.

        Tough to discern sounds through a video…
        But if it only happens under loaded conditions it may be engine ping.
        Might suggest you see when it last has a full tune up.
        Also might be a good idea to inspect the plugs and check that the timing is with in specs.

          Thanks for the reply! Just ordered new plugs, rotor, and plug wires. Im almost sure they have never been been done on the car. I did have a random misfire code a week ago. I’m at 105k so it’s def due.

          Never have had engine pinging before so it does sounds like a rattling lose bolt?

          Could I put my listening tool somewhere on the engine to hear it, wonder what a good spot would be.

            Sometimes it does sounds like a rattling lose bolt or a chain rattling around.
            All depends how bad.
            Unfortunately, if it is engine ping under load, gonna be a bit tough to use a listening tool while driving.

              This tool is an electronic listening ear that Clips onto whatever part of the engine I want and then I listen to it via a remote unit inside the cockpit so it’s actually pretty easy so long as I can find a good point to clip the device to.

                In that case might try on the intake manifold as close to the heads as possible.
                Though not knowing the specs of the unit the sound frequency may be out of its range.

                  I am using a STEELMAN 97202 Wireless ChassisEAR, interesting point you just raised. So a noise could be out of range for the device?

                  The first test I did I hooked up one of the probes to the rear exhaust manifold bolt. That didn’t turn up the noise. Figured that back part should carry the noise since the exhaust is flow out but maybe I will try to get a different spot.

                    Spark knock / pinging is easy to spot by watching the timing pulls and knock sensor on any scanner with live data.
