Hello, I am working on troubleshooting issues with my van, a 2001 Chrysler Town and Country 3.8. Two days ago it stalled going down the road, when I restarted it there was no power and it could not move forward. I let it sit at the side of the road for about 5 minutes then was able to start it and get it moving again. Today I start it up after sitting over night and it sputters and stalls. If I give it gas it has a miss and is blowing white smoke that smells of fuel. It does have codes for P0106, P0107, P0108 which are map sensor high/low voltage. Also it runs smooth at 3000 RPM, but rough at idle. But if I goose the throttle it misses and drops power.

I am thinking it is either a clogged catalytic converter, a bad MAP sensor, or possibly a stuck fuel injector. I think the first thing I need to do is pull the plugs and see what they tell me. After that maybe a power balance test to look for a bad injector. Could this be a vacuum leak or an EGR issue?

I have not ruled out a blown head gasket but the symptoms came on so suddenly. There is no coolant in the oil. The white smoke is a new symptom, it was not doing this day one. I’m hoping it is just unburned fuel from when it was stalling out at idle. What do you guys think? Am I on the right track with the cat/MAP issues?

      Thank you

if you have codes for a map sensor that would explain rough idle and loss of power, first check the wiring too the sensor and the connections to make sure they are clean, then try cleaning it first with MAF sensor cleaner if it is the wired type which it probably is, if that doesn’t work then you probably have to replace your MAF sensor.

Thanks, I might just try a new MAP sensor and go from there. I’m willing to spend the $65 since it is pointing to that. And if that could be the whole cause I’ll give it a go.

i would look at it first, make sure the wiring is in good shape and the electrical connections are not corroded, you don’t want to spend the money if you don’t have too, if you know its bad then replace it, more than likely it is, but just to be safe check the wiring and electrical connections.

The wiring all looked good so I bit the bullet and replaced the MAP sensor. The rough idle is still there, the white smoke is now black. Some new things, the alternator light has come on, the fans come on even when the engine is cold. I still have the P0108 code and a new code P1598 for high AC pressure, even though the AC is off.

My new thoughts are bad ground or bad PCM.

Problem located. The harness where the injectors and the map sensor (which is under the intake) all join the main wiring harness was melted through. This is apparently common on these vans. The result was when the map sensor was plugged in one of the injectors grounded out and stayed on full time. As a result fuel seeped into the oil pan.
