ok, got this car in a trade for an old 2 seater boat that i never used. I was told it had a blown head gasket..when i cranked it, it didn’t have any compression, was turning over way too freely. when i checked the coolant, there was barley any in the radiator..so it was a reasonable i thought to suspect that the head gasket was blown. now as i tear into the engine, over the course of a few weeks for a few hours at a time, i finally got to the stage to remove the timing chain. now when i look at the timing marks and compare to the following illustration, i am finding that the camshaft timing marks aren’t lining up as they should. i have drawn on the image the approx location of both timing marks when the crankshaft is aligned. i have indicated the locations by the spray painted dot in the picture. my question is, what does this indicate? did it just jump time, or did could this be a result of the head gasket going and what is the correct procedure to realign before pulling the heads? this is my first head gasket job and i am looking at this as a learning experience so i am not worried about farking this thing up..worst case scenario i will part it out and scrap it. i would like to see if can get it going as a challenge.
