Hello ETCG people,
So my 01 Chevy cavalier z24 has developed an issue now where when from a stop it stumbles and hesitates when you hit the gas, almost as if it’s going to stall. After it gets going acceleration is fine. Seems to be worst when the engine and temperature are warmer. Cleaned the throttle body and changed plugs but did not help. Any ideas what to check next?
The problem seems a little worse from reverse, FYI.

I do have an idea… The Cavaliers are notorious for having leaking intake manifold gaskets. The intakes are plastic on these (I think on the 2000 as well?) Over time with heating and contracting, the gasket fails and they begin to sip unwanted air. You could try to clean the throttle body and see if it improves, but my guess would be the un-metered air getting around the intake gasket(s).
They are known for that. Not just that engine/model/year either. I see GMs with this issue pretty regularly.
With everything together, and the engine running, try spraying some carb cleaner around the intake, snorkel, and any vacuum lines. If the rpms drop when you spray a certain area than you found your leak.
Do you have any check engine light or other warning indicators on?No check engine or codes. Didn’t think to try the old carb cleaner trick but I’ll see what happens with that
