I’m working on 01 camry 2.2L and both fans are constantly running. I checked coolant sensor and it’s within spec, fan relays are good, working as they should. I’m stumbled, unless Toyota designed to have them on all the time? That wouldn’t make any sense.

OK….

Are you ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN there is no sensor on the radiator? It will be on the bottom and can be obscured by the fans…. Also, was the radiator replaced (an aftermarket)… Also, on the drivers side cooling fan, there should have been the wire and the plug for the sensor under the plug for the fan… Perhaps someone removed it when replacing the fan or radiator…

I would guess that it is possible that someone did not replace this sensor and/or took off the wiring that goes down to it…. Since the fans ran all the time and things were OK then everything was fine…

A thorough check must be taken… Note Raistian sent you the first PDF which clearly shows that sending unit on a 2.2L 2001 Camry radiator… That is right next to the bottom tube of the Radiator on the passenger side… See pics I have sent and the websites I have linked… It should be there…

Yes, Im certain that there is no sensor or wiring for it. I searched on youtube and this guy is replacing radiator and it shows wiring and sensor there http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZ292c89l44&feature=player_detailpage
I will have to go to junkyard and see if I can find car with that wiring there, maybe sensor attached as well.

Sigh……As I have been trying to tell you……

Look for a cut or missing wire on your drivers side by your radiator… A junkyard is a good idea so you can see what should be there and compare to yours…. Also to get your fan switch/sensor….

Keep us posted…
I see that on this wiring diagram it’s marked 1Mz-fe which is 3.0L engine. Engine Im working with is 2.2L 5S-FE. Don’t know if it would make difference in wiring diagram.
Ahhhhh

Yes I see it now, yeah unfortunately I did not notice it is a dual purpose wiring diagram, sorry about that.

Yeah you don’t have the failsafe only the radiator switch, like Karl mentioned it looks like someone removed it from the car and likely wired it directly together check where the pic Karl posted shows the harness attached to the fan shroud, look in that area for a extra connector that is likely jumped.

I would say someone did a radiator change, forgot to save the sensor, and decided to go lazy and just wire it together.

On a similar note, this is why rigging fans to run 24/7 is a bad idea, the motors are not rated for continuous operation and they burn out much sooner than they should. Plus the extra load on the alternator causes it to work harder and the engine to waste fuel as the alternator puts more load on the engine.

There is some wiring harness by the drivers headlight, I bet that was supposed to go to wiring that goes to the sensor mounted on the radiator.

And the plot thickens… Like a CSI episode… A vehicle autopsy…. 😛

Now you have to figure out what damage they did and how to make it right again…. This shouldn’t be too bad…

This is how people who work on their own cars who have a little dangerous knowledge can make it tougher to find out what went wrong….

I just hope they have wiring at the junkyard as usually these cars are so damaged, entire front ends are gone.

If your search turns up with nothing.

Try http://www.car-part.com/ you can search for your radiator and call the junkyards to see if they have the harness (called a pigtail), they will ship it to you. And the site is international if you are outside the states.

I never thought that finding this part for a very popular car would be so hard. I went to junk yard and only car that did have it-they sold entire front clip and wouldn’t allow to pull any parts from it.
I’ve been emailing sellers on ebay who have same car and most of them say what is this such sensor you’re talking about???
Only 2 people said that they’ll check for me and I keep my fingers crossed.

I would think that as long as you get the wires right all you’ll need is the sensor, some wire, and a couple of electrical connectors. It would be great to have the proper connector, but if you can’t find one, at least your fans will work properly because you have the switch and wires hooked up.

Yes I might do that as last resort.

Well I lucked out today and got a sensor/wiring from local pick N pull. Hope I can fix this issue with the car to keep the owner happy.

Looks like I’ll have to buy another primary cooling fan as the one that’s on there (that I just swapped this past summer) is already dying. It only works if you manually push the fan blade, then it starts working.
