My aunt’s 01 Camry 2.2L is overheating. Temp gauge goes way past middle of the temp gauge. I hooked up my obdII scanner and actual temp was ~200F before fans actually kicked on. She turns fan on heat setting to try control heat and that brings down temperature.
She had it at mechanic and he couldn’t find what the problem is. I know fans work and supposedly thermostat is good as well. I believe this car’s fans should turn on around 185-190 so I think it might be bad coolant temp sensor? Any other suggestions? Thanks

Air in system? Bad cap? You can test the ECT sensor by immersing it in a cup of ice water and boiling water and measuring the resistance. It should read approximately 5000 ohms at 32F/0C and approximately 250 ohms at 212F/100C.
How many miles are on this vehicle?
A visual inspection of the underside of the radiator cap is an easy way to start.
A thorough visual of the cooling system might be a good idea, as well. Any coolant leaks? Do you know if any hoses have been replaced recently? Anytime the system is opened, air can be introduced. For proper operation, the air must be purged from the system.
