      Hi again,

I got a 4Runner that brakes weird. Going 45mph, I’ll press firmly and feel weak pressure. I press a bit more and get strong pressure. It’s hard to modulate. Pressure seems to go from light to hard in a sudden burst with no in betweens.

I’ve flushed the fluid. Rotors are new since they were warped.

When I flushed the fluid, it seems to improve the modulation. But the problem come back after a day or so. I’ve tried slamming the brake pedal down a few times while the truck was stationary, maybe loosening up some debris in the fluid lines?? I read this somewhere a while back. It seemed to help too, but again, the problem would come back after a day or two.

Any direction I should go on this. Thanks guys.

I have a 2000 4Runner that had a hard pedal, in which I cleaned and GREASED the front caliper’s sliding parts. It feels normal now. Read your manual on checking the Brake Booster, and make sure there is no air in your lines. Hope this helps.

check that all slide pins are lubed. hard call here.
master may be developing a problem. Try bleeding the
brakes again.when you did the rotors were the pads done?

            Thanks for the responses.

I kind of inherited this truck from the inlaws. From what I see, they didn’t do anything EXCEPT maybe change the oil when they felt like it. The air filter was totally black with a thick coat of dust on it. That pretty much shows their maintenance routine for the rest of the car. It’s got 105,000 miles on it so far.

When I got it the brakes vibrated while braking and had the modulation problem. I bled and flushed the system with new fluid. Then got new rotors. I should have gotten new pads too but I was on a budget.

I’m thinking it’s a hydraulic issue since it got better with the bleeding and flush. but came back later.

When I pump the brakes with the car off it gets harder, but not too hard. seems a little soft. My other cars go rock hard. This ones got some cushion to it.

As far as the caliper pins go, this one’s got a one piece caliper. I’m not a pro, but I don’t think these have slider pins right?

They should have slide pins. You may need to
remove the pads and try and reset the caliper
piston to see if they move.If you do this open
the bleed screw so you don’t for any junk back
              to the master.
