      Hello ETCG people,

Brand new here on the ETCG forum and I’ve got an issue on my VW Cabrio that I hope you might have some ideas on. Overall it runs fine, however at idle the engine lopes sometimes. It does not idle too high however. Have no codes currently. Any ideas/suggestions on what to check out greatly apreciated.

      Thanks,
      Sean

Hey bud. Welcome to the forums. I would start with some basic diagnostics.

        Check for vacuum leaks:

        Check for voltage leaks:

        Bleed the coolant:

Just a few things to check to get you started. Good luck.

          Welcome to the forums, Sean!

+1 with the above posts on looking for vacuum leaks.

There is also a idle relearn process that can be completed on those vehicles with the use of a VAG scan tool. I think there is also another method too with a KOEO procedure but I’m not 100% sure.

A good VW site is http://forums.vwvortex.com/forumdisplay … Volkswagen

You could also look at scan tool data for your fuel trims to see if the engine is trying to compensate for a vacuum leak or not.

When was the last time your clean your MAF?

          Keep us posted!

+1 on both the above post’s.
Some scanner data would be great.

Thanks everybody for the help. I decided to run the code scanner and found the following codes: P1225, 1226, 1227, 1228 and P1421, 1425, 1451, 1472. I erased the codes and will check it again. I know the 12XX codes point to failiure or short to ground in the injector circuits and the 14XX’s seem to be emissions system related. Not sure how to proceed with diagnosing/correcting these issues should the computer pop these codes again when I scan it next time.

According to a quick search i did, i found a few references to similar DTC’s on VW cars and they may be the ‘409’ fuel pump relay being defective.

It does have the earmarks of a fuel or a mixture issue. If you suspect the fuel relay issue you might try checking the fuel pressure and comparing it to spec. I’d also give the IAC a whack with the butt of a screwdriver just to see if there is any change in the idle, if there is I might suspect a problem with the IAC valve.

Thanks Eric and everybody. Will check on all these things and report back.

                      +1

You will need to find some wiring diagram’s and start doing some electrical testing with a DVOM.
