It’s called wind gate I told him it was broken and might be an issue but he said that he wanted it all put together so I did what he said

            You mean the windage tray?

One of the things the windage tray does is that it acts like a baffle and prevents the oil from running away from the pump pickup when the car goes around a corner. Since this tray is broken, that’s most likely why the oil light is coming on.

Have to ask, why was the oil pan removed to begin with?

He drove over a big rock on the road and poked a nice size whole in it

By any chance will that damage the engine if he doesn’t get that fixed soon because when I talked to him it seemed like he is going to keep it like that for awhile

In all honesty, the car shouldn’t be driven at all until the windage tray is replaced. It’s never a good idea to starve your engine of oil.

EDIT: Just noticed your edit to a previous post where you added info about the hole in the oil pan. Was the car driven or the engine run after this happened, or was it parked and shut off immediately?

When it happened he came straight home

I don’t know what else to say to him because like said when I told him that that piece might mess things up for his engine he wasn’t trying to hear that plus he said he doesn’t want to rely on any taking him places I work over the road and my wife works so it’s kind of hard to take him places hopefully it doesn’t damage anything

Still using the broken windage tray? If he’s been driving the car with a flickering oil light, the news isn’t likely to be good. Not trying to be the voice of doom and gloom, just being realistic.

Connect a direct-reading oil pressure gauge to the engine and bring it up to operating temperature. That will tell the story.

Your father-in-law sounds like a stubborn soul who doesn’t like to take advice, even when it’s free. I can imagine how he’ll react when he’s told to shop around for another engine or to replace the car entirely. Don’t feel bad. He did this to himself.
