Hey everyone. I have a car that I inherited from my mom that my younger sister drove. Needless to say it needed a lot of work to get it running good. I have two problems left to fix, however, I’m not sure what to do.

I have noticed that after the car goes into closed loop and been running for awhile. The engine rpm will jump about 800 surge and then back down between 30-40mph. When I get down to about 5-10 mph the car jerks and sputters a lot. Also, going uphill it sputters and jerks.

I have done the following with little to no improvement. Replace two engine mounts, new spark plugs, new fuel filter, change pcv system, and iacv sensor.

I know these cars have problems with the ETM (throttle body), but I used a Volvo scan program and that tested out fine. I have no engine code other then a bad ABS module, which is the other repair I need to make.

Sometimes the PNP switch acts up, but I can usually clear that by shifting gears a few times. That hasn’t happened in a few months though. This sputtering problem though existed when I got the car.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I haven’t checked engine compression or fuel pressure yet, but as I mentioned this seems to occur after the car has warmed up. I also passed emissions without any problems. Think it could be a transmission problem?

check fuel pressure while driving. Tape the gauge to the windshield.

I suppose it could be a transmission problem but I would think you would have a code indicating that. With performance problems, start with any check engine light codes you have. If you don’t have any, do a tune up as you already have. Then check for vacuum leaks or other mechanical issues. I cover these steps in detail and provide videos as well in this article.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.
