Awhile ago my girlfriend’s beetle was in a light accident but just hard enough to total it by breaking the A/C condenser and bending the radiator, and both fans. Everything else was “OK”, as the front grille was already broken from the winter. After everything was replaced I purged the system and started it, the fans weren’t turning on so I tested them with another sensor and a torch and they turned on, so I replaced the old one with the one I knew was working, still nothing, so I removed the thermostat as it had been sitting (waiting for the insurance) and it worked fine, again started it, still nothing. the upper radiator hose was getting very hot and the lower was still cold. So I blow through the upper hose to see if the radiator was plugged, it wasn’t. when I remove the purge plug while the vehicle is running the flow seems to be going towards the radiator, but I believe it should be going away from it, being on the upper hose. I’m really hoping that it is not the water pump. Is there another sensor that engages the water pump? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, sorry about the lengthy description.

The water pump is belt-driven, and is operating whenever the engine is running. It sounds like the pump impeller has failed.

What engine is in your lady’s Beetle?

VW was famous for plastic impellers on a lot of their water pumps. Drove me insane. On some of their engines its not to bad of a job. Other ones its a major PITA.

I did the return coolant test on the vehicle and the return didn’t look like it was enough, so I pulled the water pump it had the famous plastic impeller on it. My girlfriend later informed me that she believe it to have been replaced, as well as a great deal of the cooling system, over a year ago because of a serious over heating issue. The pump was fine no cracks no chips. I’m nervous about starting it because of my extreme bad luck with timing. When the ignition is turned on the red temp light on the dash is flashing, sending a cooling problem signal. My scan tool doesn’t have the ability to check the system that deeply. I’m kind of stuck right now.

BTW it is a 2.0 gas without a turbo
