Hi, a few months ago i had a problem with my Yaris 1.0 VVT-i. I had a blown gasket on my exhaust and a melted catalytic converter, cause of this problem was that my Oxygen probe (sonde) (I don’t actually know how it is in english but in Croatia we call it “lambda sonda” ) didn’t comunicate with the ECU, and the incjectors clogged up and the car didn’t quite responded to throttle (it sufocated when you added throttle like it chewed and then built-up RPM so we repaired the gasket on the exhaust, buyed a new catalytic converter, fixed the ECU, cleaned the injectors and the car was runing fine but there was another problem with the car, the strange tik-tok noise in the engine and mechanic said to me that the chain in the engine is stretched but he said that i can drive the car. It produces that tik-tok sound when it’s at working temperature but when its cold it does not I assume that it is because it has higher RPM when its started cold. When you raise the rpm when the car is warmed the noise dissapears. Is it the chain, maybe rocker arms, lifters? I dont know, i dont want to rush and replace the chain, its not a cheap repair. I have posted a few videos on you tube, ill copy the links here. I know you cant tell me anything much from a video. Im new at the forum and im sorry for my english.

The fastest way to find out what’s going on is to remove the valve cover and check the timing chain. Also a chain tensioner could be broken. How many kilometers are on this car ?

hmm….after ~65k km the chain should be OK, but I would check it anyway. You said you changed the oil recently. Did you put in the specific oil for this engine ? As I can remember it has a hydraulic chain tensioner and it requires a 5w30 oil. Do you get any codes from the ECU?

Yes, oil change was made just a month ago, 5w 40 castrol edge fully synthetic oil, no codes from the ecu.

It could be the chain or the guides. Truth is you won’t know till you get in there and do some exploratory. Timing chain slack is difficult unless you can put your eyes on the problem. More information here.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Eric, thanks for the reply. I’ll get the car checked and post the result. Just tell me is the 5w 40 castrol edge synthetic a good oil for this engine? Im asking for the viscosity… The thing is that i told the mechanic to put 5w 30 castrol edge and i came to him to pick up the car and i saw bottles of 5w 40 turbodiesel castrol edge and he sad that it is completely fine
