Happy New Year everybody! I got rear ended last Thursday. Spider crack in my bumper but no other obvious damage. My CEL came on sometime on Friday or Saturday. Retrieved code P0457. I cleared it today, but in case it comes back I’m wondering what to look for that could have been damaged. Nothing’s wrong with the gas cap. Thanks in advance for your help.

I just rear ended my wife (if you know what I mean) so this post got my attention and will thusly respond:

        $12 + autozone = new gas cap + -(P0457)

Your victory may be short lived as the P1457 is for a leak in the canister side of the system NOT the tank side, that’s a P1456. If it comes back you may need to take it somewhere that has a smoke machine that can help find the leak. Keep us posted.

Well so far the P0457 (gas cap) hasn’t come back but I did get a P0455 which is a “gross” leak. I cleared that too and I’m waiting to see which (if either) comes back. I looked under the car and I couldn’t see anything out of order as far as the fuel lines or tank or what have you. I found a post online that pointed to the vapor mgmt valve….
Anyways, I just ran an OBD test on it with my ELM 327 and the results are attached in pdf format. Do any of the numbers raise a red flag?
I very much appreciate all the feedback and comments folks.

                    Regards,

                    Ira

First let me apologize for misreading the code in my last post. Sorry bout that. Now onto the issue.

The ‘gross leak’ shouldn’t be too hard to find if I’m honest. You may not see something so much as ‘smell’ something when looking for that leak. With the evaporative emissions systems it’s the small leaks that are difficult to find not the big ones. Since you got ‘rear ended’ I’d be looking in that area for the problem. Perhaps the tank was punctured or a line was knocked off. A big leak is just that, big.
