Hello all, hope you can help with this issue. The car in question sometime ago developed a leak from the water outlet. I replaced it once and thought all was well, but I found it was still leaking (only a lot less than before) However, once I finished and ran the car to get the coolant running through it and trying to get the air to bleed itself out, I noticed the ETS light had come on. (ETS OFF) It would not let me turn it on and when putting the car into gear it gave a hard jerk etc.. After driving it around a bit (roughly 2-3 trips around the block) it finally when back to normal, the ETS Off light went away and the car shifted smooth again. (ETS Button was not functional while it was Off on starting the car)

I finally got a chance to tackle the Water outlet again today and took it back off and found that the new rubber ring gasket had rolled up off of the groove around the outlet when I had originally installed it which was allowing it to still leak. So, I have fixed it hopefully for the last time this go around, but again, after finishing up my ETS Off light is back on again this time accompanied by the Service Engine Soon Light. (Service Engine was not on prior to draining the coolant and working on the Water Outlet). This time around I have let it run a bit with the heater on to get rid of any air and have made sure coolant was not getting low etc..

I have not put the car into gear as I really do not want to risk damage by the hard jerk it will no doubt do again. Anyone else had similar experiences with this model car?

ETS is back functional after letting it run idle for 30 minutes more. Service Engine Soon light is still on however.

What water leak? From where? The HVAC system? A window?

Enhanced Traction System – Reduces wheel spin when one of the front tires loses traction.

Coolant from the water outlet. Upper radiator hose connects here and also feeds to the Heater Core. Normally the Thermostat would be here but on my Grand Am that’s under the car.

Oddly enough, after driving the car today (for a better part of the morning) the Service Engine Soon light went off and has remained off so far.

My wife’s old car, a Pontiac, had a button labeled traction and it would flash on slick roads.

Anyway, many of the codes the computer can set will get deleted if the conditions that caused them go away. So, for now, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Yeah I figured the computer probably is resetting itself due to it “noticing a change” but I am mainly wondering why draining and refilling new coolant after doing a repair the ETS would even do that? It is boggling my mind as the coolant as far as I know has nothing to do with the traction system. Unless any air in the coolant lines that has not bled out yet and is near/at the sensor is telling the computer that something is wrong and it is trying to protect itself in some odd way?

Reason I am a little concerned with it is the whole system fails to run properly until it finally goes back to normal, car will shift to each gear extremely hard and when you first put it into Reverse or Drive it also goes into gear hard. Once the system resets that ETS system everything is back to a nice smooth shift transition. It only does this on any major change to the coolant that I can tell, oil change doesn’t do it, spark plugs/boots do not do it, etc. A buddy of mine has a 2000 Sunfire which also has the same motor in it, it is almost exactly identical with exception that the intake filter and such as slightly smaller and shorter run to the intake itself. But both are the same block and all. His does not do this as he also had the same water outlet leak not too long ago.

Also yes, if I force my car to peel out with ETS on I get the light flashing, but that has always been normal. Rain or snow mainly.
