Alright, I’ve got a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am, 2.3L I4 Twin Cam. The EPA says it should get about 30 MPG. Right now, I’m averaging 20. I’ve changed all the fluids, except for the diff fluid (no idea how to change it or if it’s even possible), and all the filters except for the fuel filter. Also changed the plugs and boots. Is that single fuel filter the problem?

If it has over 100.000 miles on it and the front (pre cat) Oxygen Sensor is original I would replace it. After a lot of miles they just don’t react as quickly as when new.
Add some injector cleaner to the tank won’t hurt either or have the injector cleaning professionally done. Find someone who has MotorVac or BG equipment and chemicals is best in my opinion.
I find that STP makes a good product for adding to the tank.
O2 sensor went bad a few thousand miles ago, replaced it myself.
I’ve used Lucas and SeaFoam in the tank, in the oil, and through the brake booster vac line (not Lucas obviously lol)
Okayyyy….The next step would be to connect a scan tool that reads data and see what the fuel trims are like. If + or – 5% then the fuel is being adjusted correctly for your engine needs. Tire pressures, alignment angles, dirty air filter, bad thermostat, A/C usage, tools and extra junk in the car or a combination of all has an effect on fuel mileage.
If OK then you would need to be aware if the transmission torque converter is going into lockup and at the correct speed. If OK the next step would be to analyse your driving habits. A heavy foot has the greatest effect on fuel mileage.
How big of an affect would a high idle at startup have on fuel economy? I define high idle as 1,500 to 2,500 RPMs at startup, then going down to about 1,000
High cold idle could have some effect on mileage depending on what is causing it but I think that they are supposed to idle that fast when cold.
If you sit still for a long time and wait for the idle to drop down you’re wasting fuel.
I do sometimes, but not a lot. And when I do, it’s always when I’m waiting on the better half to get ready 😆
I might toss a fuel filter at it, idk if it’s ever been changed and it’s got 202,000 miles on it
Aren’t women crazy? I can’t believe she wanted to get her oil changed at walmart instead of me doing it. It’s not that hard. It’s just a 2010 Toyota Camry after all. It’s not like it’s an Audi or something, where the only way to get the oil out is through the dipstick tube. Or another type of car that doesn’t even have an oil dipstick
