hello i bought a 2000 Pontiac gran am se 2.4 l . it dies dies for a split seconded well driving . i notice when it does this all gauges reset and stereo does to . i have noticed from time to time that the security light next to the rpm gauge comes on . i have read that these cars have faulty anti theft devices as wel as crank angle sensors . as for scanning ecm is not an option for me as i don’t have the cash for a obd2 scanner .

thanks in advance for you’re time.

Sounds like a poor electrical connection or bad ignition switch. with the car stopped and engine running wiggle the key around to see if the engine reacts to it. If it does or does not I think I would replace the ignition switch.

check relays, and all your connections to the ignition switch, i do agree with wysetech though. sounds like a bad ignition coil.

the weird part is it automatically start right back up on its own . the only way i know the engine dies is the brake peddle will sink to the floor when it does this . other than every thing else cuts off and comes back on . also it happens a lot more often when useing the cd player . fm or tape almost never .

Accord, these are all great suggestions. You may want to check your batter connections to make sure they are tight and corrosion free. As simple as this sounds, it can create this scenario and others that mimic a more serious problem. Good luck

To add a little more to above suggestions:Yes that car does have security issues along with ignition switch issues. You have to really do a drivability diagnosis with the proper tools to find your issues. Follow Eric’s Performance and Drivability link…very helpful: http://www.ericthecarguy.com/faq/solving-automotive-performance-issues. One of the first things you do on drivability issues is check connections…battery cables ect.

ok i checked the battery and terminals . terminals are bran new just instal today and battery stays 12.4 volts when car is off . when car is running it remains at 14.4 volts . after all this i took it for a drive did it once but with cd player on it does it a lot more . if i just have the fm on it does it once then thats it.

Is the Radio/CD player an aftermarket…maybe with an amplifier wired in?

was there a recall on this system. and if so since im the 3rd owner and was not aware that this car had this issue with this system would the dealer ship have to replace or fix it ?

thanks for the info buddy if the dealer will not fix it i will try it .

If there’s a recall you should be able to call the dealer with your VIN and ask if it’s been done. If it hasn’t, they should take care of it even if you’re the 3rd owner. Recalls are not limited to original owners.

That thumbler is way too worn, you need to get that replace buddy. All those GM does that, The keypass sensor is located around the thumbler as well. Might really turn out to be damage from all that movement.

I don’t know if GM replace the thumbler and/or the ignition switch as their recall, but check on that. It’s on the dangerous side as you can’t shut the vehicle off.

Looks like an ignition switch issue. I’d call GM again to see if it’s covered under their recall. If not, you may still need them as the switch has to be set to the system inside the car. If not, it won’t start even with the new switch.

                                    Keep us posted.
