motor shakes while in drive at stop lights ,sometimes it idle down and shakes not so much when it warm up ,but still shakes, ,no check engine light is coming on , could it be timing belt,124000 miles ,the car is new to me , so I do not know if timing belt change, also when motor fan turn on it causes the motor to shake more and when the motor turn off the motor calms down ,have change change 2 motor mounts ,I could change a 3rd to see if that would help, you can not see the 3rd on the right side of the motor its the main mount, the shaking seem moore when the motor is cool and not so much when the motor is warm

Check your engine mounts… I think Neons were known to have an issue with them…

One way to check them is by having someone rev up the engine in gear with the emergency brake on and the brake pedal depressed, then safely observe how much the engine moves…

Neons are also very particular about the alignment/preload on the torque strut mounts. If they were replaced previously they may not have had the proper alignment procedure done. Also there was a PCM update that addressed rough idle. Does it smooth out if you turn the steering wheel while it’s shaking?

Powertrain Control Module, or “engine computer.” I had an occasional rough idle on my 02 neon, seemed worse under electrical load (using the rear window defroster while the headlights were on). I never took the car to the dealer for an update but I had to replace my PCM for an unrelated issue and it never did that again and idled much smoother. There is a TSB about updating the software to cure idle issues. But turning the wheel while idling causes the computer to tell the idle air control valve to move to compensate for the power steering load. If that makes your car smooth out I’ll bet that’s it. Otherwise I’d say it’s motor mounts/mount alignment

All great suggestions here, and model specific at that. I’ll just add this article link since it applies to issues like this.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.
