I have a 2000 Passat GLX 4motion wagon. While I was trying to fix a jammed seat-belt, I somehow tripped pretensioner. Do I need a new seat-belt assy. or can I just get it to work (dangerously) with out the pretensioner?

When it comes to safety Replace the seat belt.

Yes. Once the pretensioner deploys it must be replaced to function properly. Before you order parts you might call the dealer to see if they may help you. Some companies warranty seat belts for the life of the vehicle. No promises, but it’s worth a phone call.

Good luck and keep us posted.

It needs a new pre-tensioner…. Now I must ask if this car was rolling or sitting still? Key on or off? Driver or passenger?
Even if you was yanking and banging on it it should’ve never have deployed unless the data parameters were met.
Doesn’t seem like normal characteristics to me. I would taket it to the dealer and explain what happen and see if the get a field engineer to evaluate the black box data.
I deploy these things all the time and I’ve never gotten one to deploy outside of the programmed parameters unless I directly bypass the modules and power it manually.

            Very interesting indeed.

If it needs to be replaced and everything tests “OKAY”?

Find a pick and pull yard and pull the part of a salvage car. Just examine the unit to make sure it was not tripped in the event of an accident. I know some will say “Use NEW Only”. But in a pinch, used parts will be okay. Just make sure everything looks good and isn’t damaged.

(I’ll await the yelling I’m expecting in my direction soon)
