Hello Eric, I have a 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue with 199,000 miles on it. Recently I’ve been hearing a high pitch humming sound, that seems like it’s coming for the center of the engine. I don’t hear the noise on start up, but only after the car is warmed up and when it’s in drive the noise stops while i am accelerating. No check engine light is on either. What do you think it could be?

can you record this noise, common issue that causes sort of a humming noise with these cars with high miles is the power steering pump, they run out of fluid or get warn out and when they wear out they make a whining humming noise, but usually in this case the pitch of the whine increases with engine RPM.
it could also be a alternator, i and a few others could help you narrow it down more if you can make a video of this noise…
whats the power steering fluid level? whats the voltage with the engine running?

I had too take my headphones off its so loudplease excuse the delayed reply, the voltage is at the battery, your voltage at the batter static, this means without the vehicle running should be 12.6V give or take a few volts on a fresh charge, with the car running you should have 13.5-14.5v no more no less as the alternator charges the system with the engine running.
that’s defenetly not a power steering pump, it could be a number of things including the alternator at least I think, follow the instructional video that Eric has, if you have a stethoscope or a long thick screwdriver poke around with it see if you can find where the noise is, just be careful and don’t hurt yourself, a good place too look is the passenger side of the engine where all the pullies are, put the stethoscope near the pullies see if you can find a bad bearing, listen for anny odd wirring noises, I think you may have a pulley off or something
also is your blower motor on at that time? does turning on or off your blower motor make a difference? also see if turning on or off your high beams, and electrical accessories makes a difference.
The mystery has been solved!! I found, that the PCV valve elbow had a tear in it and was worn out, plus it was being pushed down by the engine cover on to the valve opening. It was almost like the sound a balloon makes when you pull the opening tight and the air comes out. Peace and quiet at last!! Thanks everyone for the help; I am very thankful.
