Ok, here’s the issue. My 2000 Oldsmobile intrigue will start on occasions. But there are many times where you shut off the car and when you attempt to start it again, well.. nothing. I get my dash lights, bells and whistles, I replaced the battery which didn’t fix the problem. Yes there is oil, all the fluids are topped off. Plus another thing that went on even when we bought the car new, there would be voltage drops, every so often. The headlights, and dash lights would dim, although it didn’t concern me ever cause as far as I know it didn’t wreck the car. But anyway, last night when I took the car to the gas station to get some pop, I went to start the car and nothing! It took me 5 min of turning the key before it finally kicked on! If anyone has any ideas it would really be appreciated!

I found something intriguing, tonight when I was heading out to the gas station to get a snack, the vehicle didn’t start after about say 5 times of turning the key. But when I messed with the steering wheel and the shifter it started! It was odd, I don’t know whether they caused the vehicle to be able to start but, by pushing the shifter farther into the PARK position and maybe messing with the steering wheel it started! Any ideas? I’d also like Eric to view this. It’s quite possible he has worked with this “sort” of situation before.

Oooh! I know this one! 🙂

Your neutral safety switch is not properly detecting the vehicle being in park. It could be the switch or wiring, but on my buddy’s truck, the column lever was loose and it would fall down just enough to lose contact and the truck wouldn’t start. I’m pretty sure your car has a console shifter, but it could still be sitting in park too loosely and not making contact. Until you can figure it out and fix it, just put it in neutral and it should start right up.

Comes to show, from an experiment just now, that neither actually fixed anything. I guess it was just coincidence 😀

I’m glad someone pointed out a possible problem with the neutral safety switch, something that was also pointed out in the starter video I posted BTW.

Glad you got it sorted out, thanks for the update and for using the ETCG forum.

Actually I got the problem sorted out. After a couple days of testing, it was the ignition switch all along. If the key isn’t in the cylinder ALL THE WAY, like literally until the spring is fully compressed, it won’t start. What I discovered is that there is apparently a “theftlock” signal wire, and when the key isn’t compressing the spring the signal wire doesn’t make the circuit. In turn causing a no crank.

That’s an interesting twist (pun intended). Thanks for the updated information, I’m sure it will go on to help others.

Well after all the procrastination, I went to go get the vehicle scanned and of course, the check engine light is gone. Doesn’t come up and no codes were found, although now, after all this time, the car finnaly stopped cranking. Here is a video of what is happening (Yes I know the check engine light is on now, but when the car starts it goes away) From my knowledge, I think it may be either the cam or crank position sensor. I don’t want to bring it into the shop since the shops near me gave me an estimate of $400+ which is ridiculous. I do not not know how to replace the cam sensor but I know how to replace the crank sensor. Can anyone give me a little help?
