Last night on my way to work i had a stop at the store, when i restarted the car the CEL came on, and when i put it in reverse it clunked really loud from the trans. backed up, put it into D4 (clunk again), and started on my way….knowing it was a trans issue after reading about all the horror stories. I just got this car from a dealer 3 months ago with 140k miles, 1 owner, everything checked out great……heading to work my car wouldnt go into 4th gear (i noticed i was running about 3.5k RPMs). As i was leaving work later that night, the car had no problems during a cold start, until i stopped on my way home. after a restart it happened again….clunk in reverse, and lost 4th gear. this morning, same thing. fine driving until i stopped the first time. it happened again and can only assume it will continue to get worse.

I took the car to autozone and had them scan for codes, it returned P1705 which the manual says “Auto transmission failure”. after reading around a bit today i see that was just a generic description, and could possibly be a solenoid or short in the transmission range switch. Im not a car guru by any means and this car is my last resort. anybody that could give me more insight or tell me where to begin would be greatly appreciated. i really need help. thank you guys in advance.

If it’s a V6 it’s likely you need a transmission. No matter how well they’re taken care of those transmissions go bad. It’s a defective design. I talk about it here.

Good luck and please keep us updated on your progress.

            Update on this topic:

After giving it some time, the CEL went off and the clunking noise when shifting into reverse and D4 stopped altogether about a week after posting this thread. Maybe it should be noted that i left my sunroof and windows down one night by accident and it poured rain to the point i woke up to puddles in the floorboards. that is when the problems started. Once everything had dried out a week later everything started working normally again, no errors and no electrical issues like my cd player turning on and off randomly. Car has been running like new since then…

Could this had been caused by a glitch in the electrical system?

There is a shift solonoid under the console in those, have seen on different vehicles thru the years, coffee, soft drinks, etc get spilled on the console and cause all kinds of weird problems. Could have caused yours.
