      I have a 2000 Grand Prix GT with the 3800 non-supercharged engine. The issue I have been having is the transmission will not shift into overdrive. The RPM’s will stay around 3000 at 55-65 MPH. I recently got a “P0742 Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Circuit Stuck On” code. I cleared the code and it hasn’t come back on since but, is still not shifting into overdrive 4th gear. Tonight when driving on the highway at about 60 MPH The Tachometer dropped to zero and stop registering the RPM’s and the TRAC OFF light came on. Shortly after the “Service Engine Soon” light appeared. When I hooked it up to the Diagnostics I got a different code. I received a “P0336 Crankshaft Position A Circuit Rand/Performance” code. I looked under the hood and didn’t notice anything broken or disconnected on the different sensors. I couldn’t see the Crank Shaft Position sensor because I believe it is on the back of the engine below the exhaust manifold. Does this sound like a sensor issue or is it an issue where the Transmission may need rebuilt? Thanks in advance!

        Sounds to me like an issue with the transmission, and because the tranny and motor are bolted together, I would guess that is where your CPS code came from.

          If it has one, check if the TCC solenoid fuse is blown.

            checked the TCC fuse and it is good. I did find it odd that when i connect my leads on my ohm meeter to the electrical connections the fuse goes into it has no resistance like it is shorted out. Perhaps the shift selenoid is shorted on or soemthing like that? Can this be fixed without dropping subframe of pulling the engine. I understand its behind the tranny side cover the selenoid. I have done a head gasket on a 3.1 multiport and upper and lower intakes on this 3.8 series II. Sound like something I can handdle or take it to a tranny shop? Thanks!

              I think you might have 2 problems. As for the transmission it could be a mechanical issue. The solenoid could be fine but the ‘o’ rings that seal the fluid going to the torque converter could be compromised. It’s quite common actually. This will allow the pressure going to the TCC to bleed off and as a result the TCC won’t operate. The only way to fix this however is to remove the trans and replace the seals.

              Crank position codes are also common. In fact I’d recommend you replace the sensor, clear the codes, and see if it comes back.
