I have a 2000 grand am with 130k on it and looking for a professional opinion. The passenger side inner tie rod is loose/worn and needs to be replaced, the others look ok and the boots are in good shape. Should I replace all of them, (inner and outer) or can I get away with just loose one?

        Hi sparky62,

If the inner tie rod is the only one that is loose, then you are fine with just replacing only that inner tie rod. Keep in mind that you should have an alignment performed afterwards.

With regards to the other tie rods, if you are doing the work yourself and feel inclined to change the others, that is fine too. It all depends on what you are looking to accomplish in the big picture. Let’s say you want to change out the other tie rod ends because none of them are serviceable, and you are replacing with serviceable tie rods. It is completely up to what you want to do. Good luck with the repair!

Its up to you. Depends on if you want to pay for 2 tie rods and 1 alignment now, or 1 tie rod and alignment now and 1 tie rod/alignment later.

I agree with Rice400. You will already have the car in the air. A little extra time and money, is well spent!

You can do just the loose one but no matter what your going to need to get an alignment when you are done.

Thanks All for the advice. Gonna do both sides all the way with serviceable outers (thanks Big C). Can’t have the kid driving 65 with a shimmy in the front end! Neighborhood Firestone shop wants $550, It’s looking like I can get it done myself for $200-$250 with the alignment.

@ ETCG, AWESOME WEB SITE! Thanks for the advice and all the video’s. I service industrial printing presses for a living so turning a wrench doesn’t scare me, besides 4 kids driving all their own cars with 100k plus on them, I’m getting used to the garage floor! And a good excuse to buy myself a new tool box and air compressor! L:D Thanks again!
