Maybe you guys can help me out. I bought this truck right around a week ago, it has 173,000 miles on it and it looks really clean, but I decided to change the oil soon after buying it because it looked like it could use a change (sticker said next change was due at 175,000, thought why not) and to get myself on the schedule. Well it’s developed this weird knock/tick after changing, that I’m not 100% sure was or wasn’t there before, I don’t recall hearing it at the time of the purchase. It starts making it about 10 seconds after starting it cold, and kind of quiets down after letting it warm up, but you can still hear a bit of it from underneath.

It needs an o2 sensor, I know that – could it possibly be causing it? I changed the oil using Castrol 5w30 Synthetic Blend with a Bosch oil filter which I prefilled as much as I could, since it sits sideways, and a bottle of Lucas Oil Addative, but I’ve driven it about 80 miles since the change and I haven’t noticed a difference in noise, and I don’t want to drive it much farther if it’s damaging the engine. It doesn’t seem to be low on power, just a concerning noise.

Any and all help is appreciated! If there is anything more you would like to know, just ask!

First things first, make sure you’re using the proper grade oil and using the additive properly. Second step is to try and isolate where the noise is coming from:

I have what the owners manual recommends, which is 5w30, only it isn’t the recommended brand, as I put in castrol. I also didn’t put in the recommended oil filter, I put in a Bosche. I don’t know if it has the anti drainback valve on it, which I figure could cause a bit of a dry start issue since it is quite a bit larger (in volume) than the one I pulled off (the brand of which, I’m not sure of). I put some 93 octane gas in it this morning which seemed to help a little bit, but not a huge amount.
