I just picked up a 2000 ford mustang for 200$. Friend was in need of cash and 200$ was all i had on me. About fail in the floor when he said solid lol!
Its got a clean title and everything.

He told me from the start the car needed a harmonic Balancer. He said that is what the repair shop told him.

I did not think this was the case but the Repair shop that told him this – Im good friends with. Anyway.
I got the BAlancer off – I dont see any issue with it. I dont see any cracks chips or brakes of any short.

Me myself – Im thinking this is a Tq/converter / flywheel issue – Im thinking the counter weights broke off and causing this! It dont seem to misfire – If you accl the engine it smooths out.

I also know cracked piston skirts and such can cause issues like this. Anyone got any ideas? Can some one throw some things at me that might cause this issue. Thanks – Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZMN5yiGdCQ&feature=youtu.be

I would check all of your engine and transmission mounts. Check the simple things first before you start tearing the engine apart.

Agreed and i have. I have had many cars with failing or broken mounts – Never had one act like this. Its not a vibration so much as it is a shaking rattling thing.
Im going back out to the shop in a min and will give it anther look over?

It’s strange that the RPM gauge didn’t immediately start working, when you started the car. What are the RPM’s like when the car is at idle, and its shaking? Are the RPM’s stable? Do they go up and down? What is the speed at?

Given that the engine smooths out when you give it gas, I’m suspicious that you have an air or fuel problem. A big vacuum leak could cause the engine to run very lean, and shake like that.

Let me know what the RPM’s look like when the car is at idle, and check for any vacuum leaks (particularly in the intake tube connecting your air cleaner to the throttle body).

Rpms hold steady @ 800ish. The engine doesn’t surge or anything like that.
The gauges being intermediate like that is usely related to a fuse – At least for ford. I believe it is a security system issue. My 00 Excision did this at first – Replaced some blown fuses and it stopped.

I may have been mistaken about the harmonic balancer and its ability to go bad. After many hours of research it does appear that they can and do go bad. It was dark when I was looking at the Balancer and it appeared to me – to be one solid peace – Its not – There is a thin slit of rubber between the shaft and Balancer. After comparing to other pics online – Im pretty sure the Balancer is bad.

Ill post some pics in a bit showing what im talking about. Thanks K24A4.

Blown fuses don’t cause intermittent electrical problems. If a fuse is blown, there is no power being delivered to the component, at any time.

In my experience, harmonic balancers rarely go bad. This is because there isn’t much that can really break…they are just machined pieces of metal.

If you see your crankshaft moving around a lot, unfortunately, its probably a sign of bigger problems internally (bearings etc).

You may also want to check your belt tensioner, and make sure that everything is good there.
