For starters definitely check the basics – air cleaner, spark plugs, fuel filter, condition of the plug wires (if your’s has any) and look for any obvious vacuum hoses loose or cracked (listen for hissing), etc.
Do you have access to a OBD2 scanner? That would really help give some clues as to what’s going on. For instance, it may be a flaky O2 sensor, but it’s tough to know without looking at the PID values.
As for fuel injection cleaner, IMO there’s only 1 that’s worth trying – Chevron Techron – because it was called out by name by companies like Porsche and BMW to solve issues back when our fuel was causing problems with their fuel injection systems. Buy the Techron concentrate that comes in a black bottle, not the stuff in a blue bottle, and not the products that say ‘contains Techron’ because they can be as little as 1%. If that doesn’t work, and you still suspect injector issues, then have a shop do a cleaning with the stuff that runs right into the fuel rail.
But the main thing is trying to gather some diagnostic evidence as to what’s causing the problem – otherwise we are just guessing.
