I have an’00 F-450 crew cab DRW 2wd with 118k miles. It has the 7.3 Powerstroke. I recently replaced the alternator and replaced the batteries with 2 interstate branded marine batteries rated at 750 CCAs. Recently the truck has been exhibiting issues starting on colder days. This weekend I rep;aced the glow plugs. Today was the first day driving it with the new plugs and all day long Ive had random intermittent crank-no start issues. Tonight at work I hooked a jump box to one of the batteries and even in 34 degree weather she pretty much started right up. When I got home (11 minute drive) I pulled out my DVOM to check what the batteries were reading. With the engine idling and electronics on (lghts, heater, radio) the batteries were reading right at 13.5. Im assuming the alternator is good which would lead me to supsect batteries. Prior to the glow plug switch I didnt really have the crank no start issue unless it was just really cold. Im thinking of taking hte batteries to get them load tested but wanted to see what other opinions there might be.

34 degrees…is that Fahrenheit or Centigrade?

If it’s Fahrenheit, perhaps the diesel fuel you’re buying hasn’t been blended for colder temperatures, and you’re experiencing waxing/gelling of the fuel. Is there a fuel filter canister under the hood? They need to be drained and cleaned out every so often.

Aside from that, are you using the glow plugs during cold starts? And, since you replaced the glow plugs, another thing to look at would be the glow plug fuse. Perhaps you accidentally shorted things out while you were under the hood with wrenches.

As for a possible battery issue, the first thing to check would be clean and tight connections, including chassis grounds.

Didnt think about the fuses. I replaced the batteries tho the ones I had were 750 CCA Marine batteries, replaced them with 1000 CCA diesel batteries no problems since then. Truck still stutters and spits when its first started cold but ever since the glow plug replacement it is doing a little better on the colder starts
