      Hello,

My brother is having some issues with his 2000 Dodge Neon.. We just fixed a vacuum line on it but now he is having a sputter issue when he presses the gas past 1/8th petal.. If you do not press the petal any further the car runs great and the motor feels quite strong.. We initially thought it wasnt getting enough gas so we checked that.. 40lbs is what we came up with which I thought was actually a little high.. I suggested that my brother get someone to hook it up and pull any codes it may have.. Would anyone have any ideas? I may be able to get a video with sound of the issue if it is needed.. Yesterday we changed his air filter and while we were therre cleaned his intale out a little bit and he did say it improved a bit but not a lot.. This leads me in the direction of a sensor in the intake but I cant be sure..

I’d start with misfire diag. Pull the plugs and check their gap and condition. Get a spark tester that can give a measure of spark kV and make sure the coil is putting out enough voltage.

          Thanks.. Ill do that..

He just told me 5 minutes ago, that if he manually goes through the gears (automatic transmission) that the sputter is completely gone..

Codes are going to be the first place to start. If its running this poorly there will be codes. FYI a quick search showed me the pressure should be 50psi. Not sure how sensitive Mopar fuel systems are to that difference in pressure but I know most Vortec motors will not even run at that pressure.

Thanks, Ill bring that up to him

He did get it fixed.. The computer showed a misfire in cylinder 2 and they traced it back to the connection in the plug wire..

BTW, on these cars, you can get engine codes on your own.
                Here is the procedure:

                1. Put the key in the ignition.

                2. Turn key all the way forward – not to the point where the car starts, just to the point where all the lights come on. Do it in this sequence: ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON..

                3. Keep a close eye on your odometer. You will see a series of codes display, followed by the word “donE”…

                4. These codes will tell you why the “Check Engine Light” is coming on.
