My Durango has 135,000 miles on it. Within the last 2 years the motor makes a ticking/knocking sound on cold start up. I have read that it is lash adjusters and had one mechanic tell me that it was piston slap. The noise lasts from 1 min to 5+ mins. The noise has gotten worse of the last year. Before I would change the oil and the noise would be gone. Now it doesn’t matter what I do. I change my oil every 3,000 miles and use Mobil 1. I have owned it for 4 years. It had 100,000 miles on it when I bought it from the original owner who had a stack of service records for it. Any ideas???

I recommend you go back to regular oil as using synthetic can cause that very problem on an older engine. Synthetic oil flows differently than regular oil and as a result using it in an older engine that was not designed for it can cause noise and oil leaks where there weren’t any before.
That said you might want to check the oil pressure. Low or fluctuating oil pressure is often the result of excess clearance between engine parts.
