2000 Honda CRV. I’ve checked both my manual and the Honda service manual and I’m not finding the TYPE of coolant to use. I’ve heard people talking about the blue “Honda Type 2” coolant. Is this required or is the Prestone 50/50 the same?

If you flush the system out completely I would just run regular green coolant(prestone 50/50).

Never mix coolants however. Make sure that you flush the block, radiator and hoses. Then you can put in whatever you desire.

Blue Honda coolant and prestone are not the same and should not be mixed.

If you still have the blue Honda coolant, I would recommend continuing to use it. If you go to your Honda dealer and buy it, it is pre-mixed and likely won’t carry much of a premium over aftermarket products.

Yeah, you really should be using Honda’s blue coolant as Prestone’s green stuff most-definitely isn’t the same. Prestone is known to prematurely wear out the water pump seals due it containing silicates. Honda’s stuff is silicate-free and simply easier on the system and your wallet. Two weeks ago I picked up two jugs of Honda’s coolant for a little over $13/gal from Majestic Honda’s website so the price difference is minimal when compared to aftermarket coolants which are a compromise in your Honda anyway.

My wife’s 1999 CRV has 380 000 km on it. I’ve dumped about every brand of coolant into it without flushing or worryring much about silicates or other components. The radiator and other things seem very clean. Thermostat is original.

It’s on its original OEM coolant pump, but the seal does weep a bit.

The old heap may meet the crusher before I offer it a new pump!!

I reccomend using the Original Honda coolant, it is directly compatible with your car, and you can be certain you don’t have to replace a water pump anytime soon.
