Okay, so my 2000 honda civic ex y8 227,000 miles has some somewhat bad vibrations/wobble when im pressing on the gas. When I let off the gas pedal it crusies pretty smooth, then when I press it again, the problem happens. It seems to do this around 35-65mph then it seems to smooth out after 65 all the while foot on the pedal. I can put the car in neutral while im coasting at 60 and everything feels good and smoothes out. I have changed all motor mounts to new ones, thinking that was it but it wasnt. I know its not tires or balancing had those checked already and I dont think that would be it anyways because it does this only when the gas pedal is pressed. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

The oil consumption sounds like an issue, and one that could equate to a vibration at speed. Engine performance cal also be a factor here. That said, If you still have a high speed vibration, perhaps it’s time to start looking at the inner CV joints. I cover that here under ‘driveline vibrations’.

I don’t think it is the issue here, but for what it’s worth.

I had a bad vibration on my accord from the front that increased with speed. It turned out to be a seized (partially?) caliper that was constantly applying the brake and warped the front left rotor. The car still tracked straight but could make you hands numb it vibrated so bad. Was my fault since to that point, about 6 years, I had never changed the brake fluid. New calipers, rotors, pads, fluid and car felt new.

          Good luck finding your issue.

Thanks all for the replies. Eric I have watched all your vids and read everything that u wrote on your site and have learned alot from them. So thanks again for taking the time for what u do. I do have scrubbing/grinding when braking. And ur not the first one that has said that Paul. So I believe since I am going to keep the car and I like working on my car, im going to just start replacing parts with new. Im going to go ahead and replace the wheel bearings and rebuild the brake area as far as new rotors well I put new ones on about a couple years ago so in the process of new calipers I believe im just going to get them turned down to make sure they are true because I looked at my pads and they look like they are wearing even but the rotors inside and out are ground down quite a bit and I dont wanna put new calipers in there with somewhat worn rotors. Really all the working parts need to be replaced as well as the bushings. Its not that im wasting money on parts. It needs it anyways and I gain alot of knowledge to help in the future. I will eventually find the problem.. just kinda hard to pin point it at the moment and trying to isolate things to figure out exactly what it is.

Eric is there ever a problem that you couldnt figure out your years of working on cars? Wish I lived closer to where u are I would bring it by and let u take a look at it. :/

For what it’s worth once on a mercury sable that I had it would shake and hesitate badly whenever I applied the gas. Especially when going up hills. I thought I had a bad transmission but I took it to a mechanic I really liked and he figured out that I had bad input shaft seals. I think they’re the seal right behind the axels where they go into the transmission. He said they weren’t so much leaking a lot of fluid while driving but they were sucking in air which I guess was messing with the hydraulic pressure in the tranny. (Which as etcg has pointed out in his transmission videos is very important to proper transmission function.) this may be a place to look at. Having said that I have no idea what kind of wobbling you’re experiencing. If it’s shaking then that’s the kind of symptoms I was having. Hopefully this might help a little. And I understand wanting to work on your own vehicle to learn and gain experience. This is the main reason I love working on mine. So what if I replace something that wasn’t actually the cause. I learned a lot in the process. But hopefully it did fix the problem lol so I don’t waste any money

Honestly, consider your investment here. If you end up needing an engine, is it really worth putting all that money into the suspension and brakes? You’ll never see that money back. The way I see it, you have 2 choices. You can cut your losses now and sell the car as is, or you can decide that the problems are not bad enough to warrant investing in and keep driving it. If you do decide to keep driving it, replace the brakes and make sure the car is safe. As for the wheel bearings, if you don’t have evidence they’re bad, I don’t see any benefit to replacing them, especially if you have all those other issues to deal with. Bad bearings don’t normally cause vibrations BTW. If it were me, I’d make the car safe, and keep a case of oil in the trunk till I found something better, or a salvage engine I could pick up for cheap to throw in.

In less you’re madly in love with the car, only invest in the stuff you need. Otherwise, you’re just throwing good money over bad.

Nah im not in love with the car…. B).. lol. I understand what ur saying though. But im going to still replace the small things. I just like doing it, its fun. If this engine ever gets that bad, Ill get a new car and use the civic as my rebuild project car. Yea I always keep a case of oil in the trunk.
Ill update if I ever figure out the root of the problem. Thanks again guys.
