Okay, so my 2000 honda civic ex y8 227,000 miles has some somewhat bad vibrations/wobble when im pressing on the gas. When I let off the gas pedal it crusies pretty smooth, then when I press it again, the problem happens. It seems to do this around 35-65mph then it seems to smooth out after 65 all the while foot on the pedal. I can put the car in neutral while im coasting at 60 and everything feels good and smoothes out. I have changed all motor mounts to new ones, thinking that was it but it wasnt. I know its not tires or balancing had those checked already and I dont think that would be it anyways because it does this only when the gas pedal is pressed. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Well, because you said it happens during acceleration, I would lean towards something in the drive-train. Check the CV Shafts, wheel bearings, and lug nuts really good. If you dont find anything there, start looking at ball joints, sway bar links, and tie rod ends. Just give your front end a really good check over to make sure everything is good. If you are really having problems finding the issue, you could jack the front end of the car off the ground, put it on jackstands, put the parking brake on, and put it in gear. It goes without saying that this is REALLY dangerous, and you should have someone in the car just in case, but with the wheels moving, you should be able to spot any imbalances in the front end.
Ive taken both wheels off and gave it a good checking. Ive grabbed both wheels and tried to see if there was any play. Ive read that alot of people on forums that have the same symptoms as mine said it was the CV joints. There is no tear in the axle boots but the joint could be broken. I can grab both axles and move them a little like there is some play/looseness where the inner cv joint connects to the differential..I dont know if thats normal or what?
A little bit of play is normal, thats just the differential action between the front wheels. There has gotta be something in your drive train that is not working right. I am assuming you replace the motor and tranny mounts? Considering in most FWD cars they are pretty much one unit, and the tranny usually supports the motor on the one side.
I replaced every mount w/ brand new ones. It vibrates/wobbles somewhat bad I almost cant stand driving it. If one or both CV joints are broken how long can you drive on a broke CV? Ive watched that how to find suspension noises. I didnt jack up the wheel and hit the bottom of the tire with a small sledge hammer to see if it would make any noises. I thought about jacking the whole front up and try putting it in gear and see if I can see anything odd. This ones kinda stumping me.
You could jack the front end up and see if you can see anything odd. Just be careful not to get sucked in or ran over (aka have a helper, or stay in the car and use a camera).
Vibrations at speed are caused by rotating assemblies. It’s not likely to be anything with the suspension. Based on your description I’d be looking hard at the transmission. Check the fluid level and condition for starters. Make sure you check the fluid level with the engine OFF NOT running. Also use only Honda fluid.
Lastly, if you have any check engine light or transmission codes (usually indicated by a flashing D4 light) pull those and address those first.
Its an automatic. I dont have any check engine lights or codes. I checked the fluid level already and its where it should be. What exactly in the transmission would cause something like this? Or do you think that as JThomsonmain said it could be the CV joints going out. If you dont think its the CV’s let me know what else I could possibly check as far as the transmission other wise as soon as I get the money I may get new axles if thats the case. Thanks
Have you done something similar to this? I’d do as was already suggested by jthomsonmain, which was much like the below video, but both sides supported on jack-stands, with the jack left in the middle in case things go wrong..
Should be able to gun it a few times with a friend(not standing in front of the vehicle) and pin-point this quickly.
The inner CV joints can cause an issue like that but it’s usually only at a given speed, not through an entire speed range. That said, it could be an engine performance problem. If you have say an ignition miss it can cause the symptom you describe. As for checking the CV joints it’s very difficult to determine but what I do is push up on the axle and watch the inner joint. If I feel a lot of play or slop then I replace that axle and recheck for the symptom. It’s more of a trial and error sort of thing if I’m honest.
