Hey guy. I have 2000 Buick lesabre 3.8 automatic. recently I’ve noticed that when I let off the gas peddle there seems to be a bit of a braking sensation. Some times even coasting down a hill the car will loose speed, the same hill I use to have to apply the brakes cause it would gain like 25km/h. I’ve checked everything, the brakes aren’t dragging and the wheels turn freely. Any ideas? Could it be the torque converter isn’t letting go completely? It almost feels like engine braking but not quite. The RPM’s do drop to around 1000 while coasting. It’s just odd because the car use to roll forever.

GM in my experience have had some finicky transmission issues for many years, both older 2000s and newer 2017s. If you know the brake calipers aren’t sticking and your oils both in the engine and trans/diff look clean, it could possibly be how your car was intentionally manufactured off the line. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Next time you’re heading downhill and it feels like it’s dragging put it in neutral and see if the drag reduces significantly. That’ll at least isolate the transmission from the anything else dragging question.

Also, there is a chance the rotors can be warped, but there would be a pulsation while stopping. If that’s the case, new rotors and lube thoae caliper guide pins. Having a foot in the brake all the time overheats the rotors, causing them to warp, even when nearly new. Every car I’ve purchased from an elderly individual had warped rotors because older people are prone to riding the brake pedal with the left foot all the time.

It’s definitely not the brakes dragging, I’ve checks multiple times. I’ve tried putting it in neutral and it doesn’t seem to change anything, but It could be my imagination. I have noticed that the rpm stay fairly high once I let off the gas and slowly drop with speed. Almost like it’s not disengaging and its engine braking, but nothing to the extent of a manual transmission. This has only been happening for a week or so and I have owned the car for over 6 months.

Putting it in neutral disconnects the engine from the wheels (hopefully anyway!) so if nothing changes it hints it’s in the chassis (or rear of the drivetrain) somewhere that’s dragging.
