      Hi all!

Just did my 1st break job on my 2000 accord sedan 4 cyl. 110k on it.

Changed the pads with Akebono since they were the OE, cleaned EVERYTHING with break parts cleaner, lubed the pins with silicone paste. Changed the rotors with a Centric part, bleed the system .

One thing I noticed is that the front right caliper’s rubber around the piston was a bit abnormal and on that side there is significantly more “new break smell”.

I was told 20k ago to replace the caliper, I ignored them as they wanted 700 bucks for it. That is actually the reason why I started doing my own maintenance and repairs.

My question is , I know the caliper is not working to its best, but its not so bad that the car pulls to one side or anything while breaking, but a slight pull after releasing the breaks, and accelerating.

I start school next week and alot of these re-manufactured calipers seem to be a hit or miss, many on BITOG told me expect at lease one or two different replacement jobs in next year to get the “good” rebuild job.I dont have time for this , Should I just let it be unless it gets worst?

I personally dont believe its going to hinder breaking performance, or its so bad that it needs to be replaced.I believe it will only cause uneven wear on the new pads, and maybe slow down my acceleration as i try to cut someone off 👿 .

      What do you think?
I have only Monday to work on this before school starts.

If I should replace it, what should I go with?
centric from amazon? ( no core return bs)
      napa elipse?
      or Prostop from pepboys?
      Something else?

I really dont wish to spend more than 50 bucks considering , there is a chance I’d have to re-do the job and call someone up for warranty ( or walk into a store).

Over the years, Autozone quality seem to be going down. I dont believe I want to go that route.

      Thanks, and stay dirty!

Since you have just done maintenance on the calipers there shouldn’t be any problem with lubrication.

There’s a quick and easy test for sticking piston. Find an empty highway and drive a few miles. Then coast to a stop safely off the road. Get out and touch each wheel to see if one is hot. Be careful, it could be very hot!

If you do find a hot wheel get a reman caliper and I’d go for least expensive. Unless your time is way more valuable than mine I wouldn’t worry about having to replace it again.

You could try cleaning up the caliper bore. Unmount the caliper and press down on the brake pedal until the piston pops out. Oh, wrap it in a shop rag first to catch the mess. Clean up the bore and cylinder until they shine. Lube up the bore and piston with brake lube and put it back together. Now, very important: bleed the brake line and press down hard on the pedal for 30 seconds, then check around the cylinder bore for leakage. Voila, a poor-man’s $700 brake job. And of course do this very carefully as your life may depend on it.

Given that it’s your brakes, I would replace it. There are some reasonably priced calipers out there that you could use. You might check to see if you can find a Beck Arnley or something like that. The rule here would be to avoid things in plain white boxes with no country of origin stamped on the box.

              Keep us posted.

                Hey,

I live in los angeles so no empthy highway. Just tried pressing breaks on a canyon and both rotors are on fire so its definetly engaging. I think its a disengaging problem that inam running into.

I already did the caliper cleaning based on eric’s break inspection video.last person that did the breaks was an idiot he used anti cease in the boots really nasty looking goo was inside. and had to use deep impact sockets to get the bolts off.

I am gonna replace them , its a gut feeling somethings wrong but car breaks fine. The girlfriend says im just being overly cautious as always so ill do the job for sake of learning if not anything.

Buying B&A i trust erics recommendations.

                Happy Mk Jr weekend.

I would recommend the Napa Eclipse. I replaced the front calipers on my dodge ram with them and have had no issues and I drive driven 100’s of miles up and down the hills in Pennsylvania with no issues. Little pricey but worth it in my opinion. Definitely better than the advanced auto reman garbage i had before.

Ended up reserving caliper from NAPA’s eclipse line, their parts warranty and returns are convenient.Online I read pretty good reviews about them.
Really didnt want to deal with buying online, returning the core and shipping. And B&A isnt available anywhere I can return easily( main shops ).

Thanks for all the input guys, will update next weekend when the job is complete.
