So here we go again. This is a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am 2.4 liter. Having problems with bank 1 too lean. (PO171) So have not done a lot on this car but to me it smells like its running rich really rich. So I have taken it to a mechanic numerous times and he can not seem to find the problem. Yesterday took it back to him for the same reason but this time he took it for a drive. He got back and said it is the fuel injectors. Could this be the problem for running too lean. PO171. Whats your guys thoughts.

So on this vehicle I have done a few things that to me were common sense. Changed fuel filter, spark plugs and the coil pack, air filter and that’s about it.

      Any suggestions would really help.

      Thanks

ya fuel pressure can cause a few issues with these cars… my brother has a 96 grand am 2.4 and the fuel pressure was low… cleaned the ground for the fuel pump and ran 200% better in my experience.

we have a lot of salt on our roads during winter.

So here we go again after thinking that we had the problem fixed. My sons car has been running great for the last few days and he took his girl friend home after school today and now car won’t start. I am completely lost here now as the car has been running i thought great but now this again today.

I don’t even know where to start looking on why the car runs great for awhile then he turns it off for 20 min or so and now he can’t get it started. He keeps trying to start it and no go but after awhile it will start. Why?

What would you guys do now? Where to start looking?

is the security light on or flashing in attempted starts? is it a no crank no start or is it a crank no start? please we need more information.

My son said the security light does not come on and does not flash when trying to start car. It cranks and sound like it will go but just doesn’t.

Try clearing the existing OBD trouble codes with the scanner and see if it throws any new ones at you. This is a complete shot in the dark here, but sometimes a failing crank position sensor will cause this.

Where is the crank position sensor located on a 2.4 liter grand am. I thought I would give it a try as the I have read lots on it that could cause my issue. Need some pictures to see where it is located as what I have looked at doesn’t apply to my car for some reason. Have a parts car so thought I would give it a whirl does hurt anything. Just replaced the fuel pump thinking could be part of the problem too.

I believe It is located in the front of the engine, above the oil filter, next to the starter. You may have to have to remove the starter for easier access to the sensor. I don’t have pictures though…

i believe this is the right position of the crank sensor. either that or autozone is wrong lol

So I took college man suggestion of being a fuel issue. The fuel pressure test was good and was over 50 PSI. Took a gamble and replaced the fuel pump (what a pain in the ass)as I had one here with this parts car that I got awhile back. Of course it was in the gas tank. Didn’t think fuel pumps worked part time always thought either they work or don’t work. Well so far its been about 5 days and no more issues hopefully it stays that way.

Thanks to all you people that suggested things to check to solve this issue. My son and I really appreciate it.

                        Thanks again.
