I’ve been driving for over 45 years. I’ve been wrenching on family cars even longer. So I was absolutely shocked that the rear disc brake pads wore out on my 2007 Milan at about 30,000 miles. A good friend has the same car, a couple of years newer. Same issue, similar mileage.

I turned the rotors and installed Raybestos ADvanced Technology pads (still happy at 60,000+).

Anyone else experience “short” rear brake life on this vehicle and any ideas why ? (Not thr E-btake. Never been touched.)

Newer cars use very soft pads with high metal content. European car makers have been using these compounds for almost 20 years. Domestics are just catching up. These pads have excellent performance characteristics but they wear fast and produce tons of brake dust. The rotors used with these pads also wear very quickly and are designed to wear at the same rate as the pads. Rears typically have a slower wearing rotor.

Small SUVs and crossovers seem to wear their rear brakes quicker and especially when used for city driving. Most of the cars i service wear their rear brakes at about 1/2 the rate of the fronts, but small SUVs wear much quicker. I may be wrong about this part, but it is a pattern that i noticed.

Then why have the fronts lasted over 60,000 and likely have another 10-15,000 left ?

To get 60k on fronts is rare. either the fronts are not working
correctly and the backs are doing the work or the rears are dragging.
sounds like the fronts are not working fully.
