I would start by checking the PCV system and make sure is working effectively.
Next on my list would be a compression test as well as making sure the owner is using the correct viscosity oil that is API and SAE approved.
And checking for severe leaks.
January 15, 2012 at 11:00 am #437217I have a Geo Prizm with 200k miles on it. It’s a Corolla in sissy clothes. It uses about two quarts between oil changes, but I’ll take it for the mileage. There are no obvious leaks? No puddles under the car? That is some extreme oil loss. I would definitely do the compression test as suggested if not.

January 15, 2012 at 11:00 am #437219Wait, you said 300 miles. Did you mean 3000 miles? That would be a HUGE difference 🙂
January 16, 2012 at 11:00 am #437220An older worn out engine will burn oil especially if you drive it at high speed for prolonged periods of time. If you burn more than a quart between oil changes this would indicate excessive consumption. The cause is most likely the piston rings especially since you mentioned that the cat has been replaced more than once, you can confirm this by doing a compression or better yet a leak down test here are some videos.

Now if you find you have excessive blow by I would recommend replacing the engine rather than trying to rebuild it as to rebuild an engine properly takes a lot more time and money to do successfully in my experience.

January 26, 2012 at 11:00 am #437222i figure every one will love to hear what toyota had to say to my friend. they payed to have a compression and leak down test done the girl shows them the compression test info says we dont know where the oil is going but you need a engine duh lol my friend as well you did a leak down where is it leaking . oh that test doesnt show you that lol im thinking it doesnt huh then they say well we found a engine for 1800 and 2200 to install lol with 118000 i find one online at a closer auto yard 62000 for 1080 lol yay roseville toyota told them they wouldnt tell the trueth and when my friend said i bet its leaking into the exhuast the girl says yes im sure of it thats why the cats are going out wow you and your tech need retraining sad thing is i told them i would do the test but what ever waste money not my car lol
January 26, 2012 at 11:00 am #437223Not % sure but give the local Advance Auto Parts a call. They have remanufactured engines for some vehicles for around $3K and as it’s a reman it will be an engine with 0 miles on it at a used price. No guarantees though but it never hurts to give them a shout.
January 27, 2012 at 11:00 am #437224hey thanks i didnt even think to tell them tha and i used to work in auto parts lol

No problem haha if they don’t have it in the computer at the store try to go on the online site and see if you can find it there. Also try jbap.com (jerry brown’s autparts) they’ve got a lot of parts for a lot of cars as they’re a salvage yard and they will ship the stuff to you I believe.
January 30, 2012 at 11:00 am #437226It pains me to read things like that as it just perpetuates the stereotype of the lazy mechanic that is only trying to take your money. If it were me I might be on the phone with Toyota proper to make them aware of the situation, if a tech can’t be bothered to perform a simple test that they’re being paid for they need to find a new line of work, perhaps something that involves the phrase, “do you want fries with that?”.

February 12, 2012 at 11:00 am #437230Unfortunately, I would rather go to the dentist than visit a car shop now days. Except for transmission and cooling systems. I found 2 great ones. I live in California and every time I walk into a shop and this is for real and it has happened 3X, they ask if I speak Spanish. I just walked out of the shop and told them, my car does not understand you.
