I have, as stated, a 1999 sunfire gt with the 2.4 DOHC engine. a couple weeks ago my fuel pump went out so i had the pump and filter replaced along with some fuel lines because of rust. it was all working just fine until this morning when i go to start my car and i dont hear the pump kicking on. i have checked the fuse and relay and they are both good and the pump is only a week old! before i got the pump replaced it use to act like it would stall out while i was driving and it hadnt done that since i got the new pump. i dont know what else could be wrong with it…any ideas?

        Hi viper1230,

I couple suggestions. If you have a fuel pressure gauge, see what the fuel pressure is. This will help verify that the pump is indeed not working. I presume the engine turns over, but work start. If you do not have any fuel pressure, and the fuses/relays are good, you might have to investigate further on the electrical at the fuel pump. Next steps would be to verify that electrical power is being supplied to the connector at the fuel pump. Sometimes the electrical connector hold-down clip gets broken and no longer “locks” on to the fuel pump electrical connector. Good luck and keep us posted.

thanks for the help! i do not own a fuel pressure gauge but i will be taking a closer look at the electrical. however i did try to start it again just now and the fuel pump kicked on and it did stat, i did it 2 more times to make sure. it started all 3 times. i have a check engine light on for my bank 2 O2 sensor and when my fuel pump doesnt kick on that light is off. it is just the opposite when my fuel pump does work how it should.

Yeah could be a loose connection or terminal at the connector for the fuel pump. I’ve also saw the inline connector on the near the R/R tire that goes up to the sending unit corrode. I’d pull that off and check for corrosion. Next time it does it get someone to crank it and give the bottom of the tank a few swats with a soft hammer and see if it fires up, if it does you may have a faulty pump.

Thanks for the update viper1230. I had a similar issue on a ’95 Dodge Caravan. If it is not too much of a pain, check the connector at the fuel pump (if the problem re-surfaces). Just be aware that if the connector is faulty, the fuel pump could cut-out at any instance (due to high resistance), and the car will turn off. Good luck and keep us posted.

I’m with the group on this one, I’d be checking the connections to the pump in the areas suggested as the most common cause of electrical issues is at the connections.

you are all welcome for the update. i will keep doing my best to keep you all updated. i did check the connections as far as making sure they are loose and they were not loose. wasn’t able to check the voltage due to the fact that i needed a second person, but i will check it tomorrow to see the voltage. i was wondering though if it could possibly be the relay? it does click, but could it be something internal that might be an issue. the relay is only $16 and was thinking about replacing that just to be sure. i have already spent close to $600 on a fuel pump, filter, and some hoses due to rust.

Shaun_300- i do not think it is a faulty pump as i previously stated that i just bought a brand new pump.

Yes i agree, check to see if you are getting power to the pump. But don’t put it past that a brand new pump can’t go bad. Im a Sales Pro at Advance Auto Parts and I’ve seen countless of times where people will bring a pump back that is defected, but found out it was caused by trash in the tank. So i also would recommend to check the tank for trash. If you do have trash in the tank and its a plastic tank all you have to do is rinse it out with water, and let it air dry. If it is a steel tank you probably will have to replace it.

Relays are typically good or bad. If you feel the relay might be the problem, swap it with another one in yer fuse box that is the same relay, but I doubt that is your problem. I think you may have gotten a crappy fuel pump, as it is intermittent. But you should definitely check all the wiring to and from the fuel pump before condemning it.

well all the wiring has been checked and voltage has been checked as well. wires are good and i am gettin the needed voltage to the pump. in conclusion i do believe you all are correct in saying that it is a faulty fuel pump. i was recommened by a mechanic and Shaun_300 to hit that bottom of the tank if it doesnt kick on…currently cant afford another pump so i shall use the hammer method, lol! thank you all for the help!

That’s too bad about the fuel pump. Seem like people are having issues with fuel pumps lately, especially new ones. In fact I think I will be doing one on my Sierra soon. I still can’t believe how my friend put so many miles on his car already with a $30 eBay fuel pump I installed for him.

                            Yes, what brand was it?

it is a napa fuel pump. couldnt afford OEM pump at 450ish so i went with the napa for 317.

Interesting, I too have been hearing about a lot of ‘bad’ new pumps or pumps that fail soon after install. This begs the question if it’s related to a set of bad pumps or is it the installation that’s causing the problem.

Thanks for keeping us up to date.

I have good luck with all of my pepboys fuel pumps and other parts.
I just did a rear brake caliper on a ford taurus with one of autozoes reman calipers and guess what, It leaks around one of the seals.
I’ll be redoing that for the owner tomorrow i guess.S:(
