I was leaving work yesterday and I pushed the clutch in and I heard a loud popping noise then after that I hear a clunking noise that goes in synch with my speed. The faster I go the louder and faster the noise, the slower I go the quieter and slower it gets. It does that when I slow down in gear or have the clutch peddal pushed in when slowing down or when in neutral slowing down. However it doesn’t make the noise when speeding up or stopped. I think it may be the input shaft bearing or the throw out bearing, but I’m not sure and I was wondering what other possibilities it could be.

I got my car back with a rebuilt used transmission and it still grinds when up shifting too fast or downshifting without rev matching. He didn’t replace the clutch as it was still good. I’m just curious as too why it still does this?

If it’s still grinding without rev-matching, I’d guess that the synchronizer rings inside the transmission are worn out. It’s possible that the transmission you got was simply used, rather than rebuilt. If it was a rebuilt unit, it’s possible that whoever it was that did the rebuild didn’t do it correctly.

+1 it may very well be that the syncros are bad and the trans was not rebuild but just used. It’s also important that the correct fluid is used in the transmission, if not it could cause problem with the syncros.

The fluid that was used was pennzoil synchromesh m/t fluid. Well if the synchros are still worn would it be safe to drive for like maybe a year? It really isn’t too bad yet…going to replace the car maybe next year.

To be honest probably not especially for that period of time, syncros are brass and won’t hold up for long if you grind the gears every time you shift. Make sure that is the correct fluid for that transmission, some manuals require automatic transmission fluid OR gear oil.

I had looked up to see if that was the correct fluid and gm does call for synchromesh fluid. So essentially I should have gotten a reman trans instead of a salvaged trans?

It depends on what they sold you. Did the sales receipt show a remanufactured/rebuilt transaxle or a salvaged yard one?

                      Salvaged

Rebuilt would have been a sure thing however it would cost a lot more than a salvage unit.
