I was leaving work yesterday and I pushed the clutch in and I heard a loud popping noise then after that I hear a clunking noise that goes in synch with my speed. The faster I go the louder and faster the noise, the slower I go the quieter and slower it gets. It does that when I slow down in gear or have the clutch peddal pushed in when slowing down or when in neutral slowing down. However it doesn’t make the noise when speeding up or stopped. I think it may be the input shaft bearing or the throw out bearing, but I’m not sure and I was wondering what other possibilities it could be.

You sort of contradicted yourself when you said “The faster I go the louder and faster the noise” and “However, it doesn’t make the noise when speeding up”. Any way you can clarify on this?

how many miles on this clutch? the clutch works but has a noise. it could be anything inside.
it could be a spring popped.A piece of the clutch. the only way to know is the transmission must
be pulled to reveal the clutch.heres a couple videos to give you a better under standing whats inside a clutch.C8-)

I guess what I meant is that it sounds like a rotational clunking noise so in turn it sounds faster as the rotational speed of the wheels/axle goes faster. It doesn’t make noise as I’m speeding up, but when I push the clutch pedal in at a higher speed it sounds faster than if I was going slower and had my clutch pedal pushed in. I hope that makes better sense…?

And as far as the videos, I thank you, but I have watched those videos and all his other videos already, lol! That is why I think it is the throw-out bearing and the input shaft bearing from my own reacher on the Internet. I also bought the car used with 85k miles and it now has 110k. Idk if it is the clutch from the factory or not.

Given that it goes with VEHICLE speed and not ENGINE speed I would say you can rule out the throw out bearing or input shaft bearing as that would not coincide with road speed, what you have sounds more like an issue with the final drive so I would be checking the axles as well as the fluid in the trans.

              This video might also help.

Had a mechanic look at my car and he said something in my trans broke. Sounded like a tooth broke on the diff or the input shaft. Any suggestions on the cheapest route to go. I can’t fix this myself unfortunately…

Hard to say, depends on what broke really, if it’s easy and relatively inexpensive to replace fix it, if not replace the trans.

Have to replace trans due to a tooth breaking off on a gear and pretty much destroying the “inner guts” of the trans to the point of not bein able to repair it.

Get a use trannys form a junkyard if someone will put it in for you.

Well I hope my clutch lasts until I can afford to have a mechanic do it or I buy the tools and have some spare time to do it myself. Only if you lived closer Eric! Lol!

It’s honestly not a terrible job replacing a transaxle if you have the tools/time/patience. Yank the axles, and support the engine. Pull a couple mounts, and (after draining the transaxle, which you should do before you pull the axles) take out the bellhousing bolts , the reverse the process. Obviously there is more involved, but it’s definitely not impossible for a DIY’er.

Ouch that hurts. Given that you’re going to have to replace the trans I would consider replacing the clutch as well if it’s been a while since it was replaced.

I would have assumed you would replace the clutch along with replacing the trans…idk, lol. I don’t think I can afford to replace the clutch along with the trans. The used(rebuilt) trans is costing 1250 plus the labor.

Don’t assume, I’ve been told a time or 2 myself to ‘just replace the trans’ and not worry about the clutch.

Talked to the mechanic today and he said he is going to replace the clutch. You in cyberspace won’t help me to have you do my repairs, lol!
