      I recently did a front main crank seal replacement on a 1999 Mazda protege on a 1.6 L engine. When I put the timing belt back on, I reassembled the all the belts and pulleys and put the timing gasket on. I went to go start the car it cranks but it won’t catch or start.
      I checked the timing marks on both the camshafts and the crank pulley and they all match line up. I cleaned and repositioned the crank position sensor. I have spark and have replaced the spark plug leads as well as new spark plugs. When I removed the spark plug it reeked of gas. I have checked all fuses and relays. When the seal failed it covered all components attached to the belt are covered in tons if oil. It was running fine before I replaced the front crank seal.

      Not really sure what could be the cause of the no start

        Are you sure the timing marks line up correctly? The mark on the crankshaft should be at 6:00 on the compression stroke and the int. and exh. on the cams pointing up with the cam gear marks facing each other inline with the cylinder head. Be sure there is no slack in the belt between the cams.

          I’m a little confused by the phrase “repositioned the crank sensor”. The crank sensor must be installed correctly for it to function correctly. By the sound of it you’ve got something out of time. Especially if it was working before you did the timing belt. Be sure that you have everything hooked up correctly and in time.

            Thanks for the the help when I installed the timing belt the camshaft didn’t move but when I put the crank pulley back on I moved it and it was about 90 degrees off.

              As long as you put it back in time, you should be fine. If it’s not in time however, it may be the cause of the issue that you’re having. You might want to double check the work just to be sure.

                The problems continue I have the timing lines matched up and the belts put back together. However, when I first start the car when it’s cold it idles at about 1500 rpm for a few minutes no problem it even drives great with no hesitation, but when it’s warm and idling under 1000 rpm it sputters and eventually stalls, I’ve already had to replace the crank shaft poistion sensor because the amount of oil that got on it caused it to short out. Also I’m now getting battery light on the dash because of the oil on the belt should I replace the belt or clean it with degreaser? Thanks again
