I was given a 1999 Honda civic 4 door (I think DX) non vtec 1.6L last week with an auto. The guy said the transmission was out of it and was drivable just not in 4th gear. upon driving it home I noticed when it would shift in to 4th it would pull just fine and shift fine up to 4th but when letting the car coast there was a loud whining noise. Its hard to explain. my dad described it like a hydrolic pump running but loader. As soon as you start to apply the throttle again it would quite down. Only does it in 4th though and under coast. I was planing on putting a used transmission in it but im not sure if it might be something that will be easier to fix than that, like flushing the trans out. the car has 176xxx miles on it. im hoping this will make me a nice first car.

Try changing the fluid using Honda OE trans fluid.
Maybe someone changed the fluid and used the wrong
fluid. If Honda fluid is not used.shifting problems
      can occur.

I’m going to assume it’s an automatic we’re talking about here. If that’s the case and you do find a transmission problem I would suggest replacement over trying to repair it. Honda transmissions can be tricky even for experienced builders. That said if the problem is specific to one gear then there may not be much hope. You can pull the codes to see if it’s a solenoid problem or something but that’s normally not associated with a noise like that. You could also change the fluid as suggested. Here’s how you can check for codes.

As an aside the main things I see that damage Honda transmissions are not checking the fluid level properly. The engine needs to be OFF NOT running when you check it. Also make sure you only use Honda transmission fluid.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Its been so cold here my dad hasnt really wanted to help me. he said this weekend we will do a fluid change on it if it is warm. (high sat of 52 here) so maybe we’ll try. Im still learning or i would do it my self. I did notice it today when driving that when it was cold still the sound was not present and as the car gets warmer the louder it gets. I did find a trans from a local salvage yard with 71K on it for $350, if the fluid change dosent help it. Im pretty sure it has new solenoids on it.
